Has anyone noticed a slowdown of their machine after they've installed this?

Everyone I know who've put it on is complaining. My machine is slower to load as is my other half's.

I've been through and done a clean up, scanned for viruses and trojans etc. cleared out cache and cookies and defragged everything in sight (no, not with Windows pathetic offering - a proper utility).

Still much slower than it was.

bobby -> RE: SP2 (10/7/2004 17:46:01)

I haven't installed it yet...

I have heard complaints about slow-downs tho. I'm not sure why that is, other than there are likely more services running in the background at startup.

The security monitor is probably one of those... I don't know how processor intensive it is.

Well that's what we were just discussing.

When you install new software MS gaily tell you about minimum requirements but with SP2 you get nothing. It just loads in. How do we know what spec it's designed for?

I should point out that I'm not just talking about Windows start-up. All the other stuff is slower to open as well. Firefox is taking ages.

Do you have a monitor that will display your processor activity and RAM status?

I'm curious if theres a spike in usage for both...?

I have not encountered any of this, but from reading some related threads, are you sure it isn't your AV/firewall combo arguing with the Windows firewall? Would it help rule anything in or out to pull your CAT-5 cable from the NIC and see what happens? (Or kill your wireless connection if applicable) Just a thought.

Regarding the minimum specs, I think the assumption would be that if your box can run XP sufficiently, it can handle the service pack. But I've seen the "chalk talk" on what can happen when you assume...[:o]

FWIW, I have a two yr old Dell Dimension (stock) with a 1.3Ghz Celeron processor, 256MB of RAM and I use Norton for AV. I really haven't had any trouble at all with SP2. Your hardware is probably newer than mine - you academicians get all the new stuff free, don't you? [;)]

Giomanach -> RE: SP2 (10/8/2004 3:31:03)

Three PC's, specs:

1:-

2.2Ghz Celeron Processor, 512MB RAM, 2 80GB IDE/ATA HDDs - XP Media Center SP2 - No Problems

2:-

1.67Ghz AMD Duron, 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD IDE/ATA - XP Media Center SP2 - No Problems

3:-

633Mhz Celeron, 384MB RAM, 20GB HDD IDE + 80GB HDD IDE/ATA, XP Pro SP2 - Only thing that don't work is Filezilla at the mo, but that's a minor fault

On the whole, all PCs run fine....still got one to put on SP2 but that doesn't have Net Access[;)]

d a v e -> RE: SP2 (10/8/2004 4:44:41)

actually mine seems a bit sluggish as well after intsalling sp2 just a few days ago :(

jaybee -> RE: SP2 (10/8/2004 7:04:53)

Windows Firewall turned off.

Doesn't seem to be anything odd appearing in the way of spikes.

Keep getting the odd load error with Ad-aware's Adwatch though.

Restart seems to fix it.

Machine is a Dell Dimension P4 1.70GHz 384Mb RAM. Not new by any means and not an education freebie!

Now self employed doing web design etc. Broke, 27 kids, huge mortgage [&o].....all donations for new top spec PC gratefully received. [:D]

Giomanach -> RE: SP2 (10/8/2004 7:14:12)

I think what helps is, if you disconnect from the net when installing SP2...

If Dial-up just disconnect, if BB, unplug modem.

On the AMD Duron mentioned in my post above...it was connected to the net via the network I have at home, and first SP2 install wasn't successful - Boot up in safe mode, remoof SP2, restart in normal mode, unplug Ethernet cable, install SP2 again - no problems

Might help some others out there

Wow Jaybee, we have more in common that I thought! I actually only have two kids, but one of them is a teenager, so he creates the stomach acid and headaches of 25 little ones.

Me and the Mrs. traded up for a bigger house in April of this year, and I quit my job a month later to go self-employed. I'll probably be using this computer until I get so old that I can no longer control my bladder. In anticipation of that day, I bought a wireless router recently that will connect from the bathroom.

A laptop or a portable commode would have been a better buy. Sitting on the loo with a desktop on your lap makes your legs go dead. [;)]

A reasonable price to pay as long as I can still check my email.

jaybee -> RE: SP2 (10/12/2004 5:42:13)

OK, it seems I may have some conflicts going on between Ad-Aware's AdWatch and various other bits of software although that doesn't answer why the others are having problems as they're using the free version which doesn't have AdWatch.

I've got a support query in with Lavasoft at the moment.

I'm also upgrading to 1Gb memory. HA HA! The Power!!!!
