7000in5th -> FP2000 won't publish on my new computer (10/10/2004 22:57:02)

Hi,

A web rookie needs some help, please.

I just got a new Dell 8400 which included Office 2003 (but without FP). Since my ISP doesn't yet have FP2003 extensions, I installed my Office 2000 which includes FP2000 and which I have been using successfully for several years on my Dell XPS T500 with Windows XP.

Now, when I update pages on one of my web sites and publish them, everything appears to function normally. However, the changes do NOT show up on my web site.

Does anyone have any thoughts about why the changes don't get published?

Thanks for any ideas,
David

Are you sure the changes aren't showing up on the page?

Is it possible that you're seeing a cached page with the old data on it? Many ISP's will send you to a cached page rather than back to the server for a real-time updated page.

AOL is the worst that I've seen so far...

Try going to the page and hold down CTRL while you click the refresh button... that should send the browser back to the server.

bobby,

Thanks very much for the ideas.

I tried several different ways to be sure I am seeing the latest but my changes don't show. I checked the files on the ISP server and they are the old files.

When I am publishing, FP tells me that it is listing the files on my computer, then tells me it is listing the files on the ISP, then it lists the pages that I have changed and, finally, it says it is processing the changes. However, as I noted above, the changed files do not show up on the ISP server.

Makes no sense to me!

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
David

Have you tried a full publish? Overwriting what's already there?

bobby,

Just tried it - the changes still are not on the ISP server.

Other thoughts?

Thanks,
David

This might sound like a stupid suggestion... but have you verified that you're uploading to and navigating to the correct pages?

Also:

Can you post a link?

Are you getting any errors?

Have you tried to upload a test page or file using FTP rather than Front Page?

Have you contacted the host?

Now we get into the "web rookie" part of my initial post. I have been using FP to do two non-commercial (hobby) web sites for several years. I am self-trained and not good at the technicalities. You may certainly assume that I am capable of overlooking the simplest and most obvious problems so there are no stupid suggestions. I appreciate your kind help and patience.

The "flying pages" window that identifies what is happening during publishing tells me exactly the same things that it had in the past with hundreds of successful publishing sessions. What would I look for to verify that I'm uploading to and navigating to the correct pages?

Also:

Can you post a link?

The web site on which I am currently working is:
Fort Wayne Corvette Club

There are some other issues, including home page confusion and timeouts, with my personal web site:
Personal Web Adventure

Are you getting any errors?

None

Have you tried to upload a test page or file using FTP rather than Front Page?

No, is a Medicare-eligible citizen trainable in that skill?

Have you contacted the host?

Not yet. My assumption has been that my computer switch and FP2000 reload triggered the problem.

Regards,
David

bobby,

The FWCC web site is back in business. I separated the FWCC site and my personal site completely and put them each in a folder on my desktop. When I republished FWCC it was okay.

My personal site still has a timeout problem when it is listing the pages on my ISP server. I will contact my ISP about that problem.

Regards and thanks again,
David

Basically the URL that you're publishing to... make sure it's the same as the one you're trying to look up in a browser

LOL
Absolutely...

Download Filezilla from http://filezilla.sourceforge.net

Install it, and then it's pretty basic to set up and transfer files. Once you get connected to the server, it's as easy as using Windows Explorer.

I started creating a very basic, beginners tutorial for using FZ here:
http://www.bdwebservices.com/T_FZ_1.asp

It still needs a lot of work, but you'll get the idea.

You don't want to upload your entire web this way... FTP will "break" Frontpage components... but it's a good way to look at the site and see what's really on it.

It will list things that FP may not. Also, you can test uploading an html page and see if it's working via FTP

It's possible. It could be that the server extensions aren't configured properly.

I would email them and describe the problems you're having... see what they have to say.

<edit>
I just read your latest post... I'm getting ahead of myself.

Let me know if you run into any other issues.

bobby,

I appreciate the info about FTP, I have been avoiding it for too long.

Thanks again for all your help,
David
