Someone has to do it. - 10/11/2004 12:52:18
A few of you will know that I'm working on a site for a plasterer. Not the most exciting of subjects but a challenge to get the site to look good.

I'm going for clean, professional and given how messy plastering is...... CLEAN!!

I think I've used up all my inspiration on the site itself (three options are currently with the client for decision) and I'm flat out of ideas for the logo.

Anyone got any brainwaves? The shape, colour and layout are cast in stone as they already have letterheads, business cards etc. I'm playing around with lozenges. Shadows don't look right. I just want it to look less flat and boring!

The page behind this link is just the holding page but has a similar colour scheme and feel to the final site.

Can we see what the three options you've come up with are?

the page you provided really does nothing for me. :(

If I were you, I'd make the side of the house more prominent - make the whole half of the page a .jpg of the house? show us the detail in the plaster, etc.... remember what Lori came up with for the guy selling real estate in spain - the page she made was very visually rich. I don't know if I'm explaining myself well.

Oh don't panic, that's just the quick holding page which has replaced the UNDER CONSTRUCTION gif that his previous designer had up there for 7 months before vanishing into the mists.

I can't show you the options as they're sketches on paper and he's taken them with him to mull over but I'm working on something along the creams and greens and blues lines. I want elegant, non fussy.

I've managed to persuade him that a revolving spraying nozzle is not a good thing to have on the homepage so I don't want the logo to look tacky. :)

Basically I just need it to stand out a bit more since I'm stuck with the rest of the design.

They don't have a logo on a biz card or letterhead...?

I hope you're charging them accordingly... :)

Obviously didn't make myself clear.

The link to the page I gave shows the logo they have. It's a done deal and I can't change it but it just looks flat and lifeless so I want to try and jazz it up a bit. Everything I've tried so far looks naff.

I've tried shadows
I've tried 3d rounded
3d squared

I'm now fiddling around with frames (NO not those frames) and lozenges.

Karen, Yes, exactly what I thought but the client doesn't want banners with pics in the background. A competitor has something similar and he doesn't like it.

Are you able to seperate out the different "elements" of the image into multiple layers in your image editor?

Then you could apply the drop shadows or a bevel, or emboss... to each piece. Might give you what you're looking for without adding the effect to the entire graphic?

Personally, I've found that a little emboss can go a long way :)

OK, I'll give it a go.

They sent me the original on a letterhead so I'm having to redraw it anyway.

I'll give it a fresh look in the morning.

You could also fill some of the text with a gradient, or paste it onto a gradient background. I like gradients - they give a little bit of oomph.

<is that a word?>

Ooomph is fine by me.

The nearest I've come to that with this logo though is a swf which explodes out of the page.

Now that was naff. :)

Hey, how about "smear" that underline a little, so that it looks faded...or in motion or something?

just dn't get a trailing cursor that looks like paint splatters. lol

Yes, not bad.

For some reason Dave's bevel looks better than my bevel. Hmmm what's different? Have to check that out.

Dan, you've been peeking. That's one of the layouts I've given to him. Well, almost. Funnily enough it's also the one he likes the least. He can't understand why I can't have the picture as the entire background (Download times) and not faded (text completely unreadable)
