Learning SEO - 10/11/2004 18:21:27
Hi,

I'm currently working on re-vamping my site and have been reading some info about how to get search engines to market it, so that they will find my site when people type in key words.

However it seems terrably complicated, does anyone know how this can be made a little easier?

I would put my web address, but as i say its under development.

Chris

You are in the right place to learn about SEO. Keep reading through the forum, ask questions and check out the online articles concerning SEO.

the biggest thing is that:

you need to target the correct words

and

you want to get many mix anchor text keyword rich inbound links from many sites pointing at your site.

Yes, you are correct that keyword research is the most important part of SEO. Without targeting the right words, you won't get the right kind of traffic that you are looking for.

You can sign up for a free trial at wordtracker.com to start your keyword research.

Could someone elaborate on "mix anchor text"? I get the rest. :)

if all of your inbound link text is the exact same it could look automated and thus flag a penalty. thus if a person wanted to rank for "seo" or "search engine optimization" they should mix up some of their inbound link text, such as:

search engine optimization
seo
seo tips
seo news
search engine tips
search engine optimization tips
professional search engine optimization
search engine optimization services
seo services

and so on.

you focus around a few main terms and then add other words that allow you to rank well for a broad range.

some example other terms could be

bla bla bla store
buy bla bla bla
cheap bla bla bla
new bla bla bla
bla bla bla reviews

and so on.

Yes, this is an unnatural method to appear to have natural links which is what the search engines like.

Chris; I start by going to Google and searching for a product that I'm selling and see how I rank against the competition. I also search using various permutations of the word or phrase (e.g. insects, ensects, bugs, bugs in wood, wood insects).
Then I look at what my more successful competitors are doing by looking at their keywords and the layout of their page and html code to see how they've positioned those words.
This helps me to tweak both the meta tags, and the layout of the text on my pages to gain a higher ranking.
Regards, Scotty
