Link Bar Only Appears as Text - 10/12/2004 14:52:57
Hello all. I've seen discussion here of similar problem but not quite exactly mine. I'm badly in need of advice.
I'm an accidental techie and recently built a site (www.defendourhealth.org) in Frontpage 2002.
It's running on a host/server that installed the FP extensions but does not provide any tech support for FP. It is a UNIX-based LINUX (Debian) running Apache webservers. Their FP-enabled Apache servers have the FP extensions loaded as a module. They are running the FP server extensions 5.0 (FP 2003).
There are two link/nav bars in the shared borders on my site. The horizontal link bar in the top border appears properly. The vertical link bar in the left side border only appears as text not the link bar images. The link bar image buttons appear correctly on my PC, but when I upload the site to the server the nav bar changes to only text links.
I know there are some various bugs with the link bars and UNIX/Apache as well as some version issues, but that's all way beyond my expertise.
Please advise!

FYI, the link bar appears properly on my machine, i.e. as images. It is only when it is published to the server that the links are changed to text links instead of the images. Does that change your advice any?

That didn't work. Deleted all files on server and republished. Vertical link bar in left hand border still only appears as text.

I dont know much about FP link bars but your code appears to me to be pure text links:

Correct Dan. The link bar does in fact appear as an image on my PC, but when I publish to my server it somehow converts to text. Which, by the way, the horizontal link bar at the top of the page does not.
I don't anything close to enough to understand why this is happening. I've read about some problems with FP extensions and link bars on UNIX/Apache, but don't know if that is the case here.

try comparing the html on your machine with it after publication and see if you can spot the difference. just a thought

Thanks. I have tried that, but because FP inserts the link bar it doesn't seem to show all the html code for the link bar on my PC.

Did you ever get this figured out? I'm having the same frustrating problem on a Linux server and the hosting company is no help. Everything looks fine for me except on the server. I can open a live page from my site in FP and it still looks fine.
Hope you figured it out and that you can help me?!

Hi
Thank you for taking the time to look at my site. I fixed it last night and didn't get a chance to come back here and post that I had.
Unfortunately, I did two things about the same time and I'm not sure which fixed the graphics on the link bars.
I opened the site live into FP and deleted the left link bar, saved it, and closed the web. I then reattached to the live site and put the link bar back. At the same time I added the Home page link. I saved and closed the web and it's now correct, except when I work on the site offline and publish it wants to replace the borders/link bars and I'm afraid to let it!

Don't know if you're still around, or if others might have ideas.
I have tried changing a variety of things "live" on my site to attempt to fix the problem. Most things (applying the theme, recalculating hyperlinks, etc.) did not work.
Interestingly, when I replaced the link bar based on navigation structure with a custom link bar, IT APPEARED PROPERLY ON THE WEB. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that a custom link bar is workable for me.
Any insights based on this new information?
I'm willing to try a CSS link bar, but am not sure that my ISP supports them.

Thanks for the help. I have some idea of what an include is, but don't know anything about how to create or insert one, especially in Frontpage.
