Critique my site plssss - 10/13/2004 5:15:07
Could anyone please critique this site for me. This is the first site I have ever done and its for my work place. I have learned everything from scratch so any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Hiya and welcome to OF.

Nice try for a first attempt but there are a few things you need to look at.

First, it took forever to load the homepage. Over a minute and I'm on a fast broadband connection. It's due to the photos and the flash. Anyone on dial-up will be ready to hang themselves by the time it all appears. Because you have different photos at the top of each page, they all have to download on each page change. SLOW.

Second, all the logos at the top and the skills for life banner at the bottom are very poor quality and need sorting or removing. It looks to me like you've put the pictures in and then resized them in the page rather than resizing and optimising them in a graphics package first. For example....
The Skills for life logo at the bottom is 87Kb. Even though it's a small box on the page it's still loading the full size picture.
The LSC logo is 40Kb,
Stoke on Trent logo is 61Kb
Add to that all your other graphics and a background image which is 78.5Kb and your page content is huge!!!

You also need to look at your layout in other browsers. I'm viewing in Firefox and you link bar at the bottom overlays the Skills for Life logo. The page is a little too wide and means I get a horizontal scroll bar.

Get rid of the "Please click here for more information" at the top of the menu. Most people understand that a menu moves them around the site. I was trying to click on that message as I thought there was something else.

Otherwise not at all bad. Most of your problems come down to graphics. Sort those and you'll be in a much better position.

Once that's done you'll need to look at accessibility. Vital for a site like yours. You have a stylesheet in there but you're not using it for your page layout. Come back when the graphics are sorted and we'll help you with the CSS.

labs123,

Jaybee posted in front of me and I concur with her remarks.

To those I'll add: you have a small amount of left to right scrolling at 768x1024 which is excessive at 800x600. Also, I did what the majority of potential visitors would be unwilling to do - waited almost 10 minutes at 45.2 kbps for your site to load. The graphics on your home page alone total over 2.5 Megabytes!

Your first design effort makes the same mistake we all made starting out - trying to get too much done on the home page rather than creating just enough interest to make visitors want to drill down. This issue and the others mentioned can be worked through with the help of the nice folks here at OutFront.

Now that's what I call dedication!!! Three minutes max and I'd have been out of there.

Hi Everyone

Thanks for the advice. I will work on those changes right now and try and load up the NEW page as soon as I can. Im so nervous about the site because 15,000 leaflets/glossy brochures have been made about my work place so its kinda mad to do this for my first site!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is classic case of being dropped in the do-do from a great height. You've done a great job visually if not technically.

Please tell your boss that you need a big pay rise!

Thanks jaybee I will!!!!

Im working on the logos now and I did do what you said resized them in frontage. Personally I dont like the logos there but they have to go on the site somewhere as they our main partners. Im only going to work on the homepage for now and will let you know as soon as I have made the changes you suggested. Once again thanks for your help.

Thanks dave Im doing them as we speak,,, i managed to get them down to about 10k but they dont look very good. Is it ok if I email a few to you ???

Any suggestions for the pics everyone likes them in there. I made the mistake of resizing them in frontpage and not before so will go do that now and hope the site loads quicker

labs123,

Resizing in FrontPage is step one of a two-step process. The second step is resampling. Do you know about this? If you haven't been doing this, it may account for the appreciable image quality loss. Choice of formats, as Jaybee pointed out, affects the outcome as well.

thanks for pointing that out larry - they emailed me the logos and i reduced them and emailed back so they will be appearing shortly.

incidentally (using FW, but same for any editor) i resized to 25% or 10% (get nice smooth reduction) with a small amount of unsharp mask, then to the desired dimensions (35px high) with some more unsharp mask and save as gif.

Hi Larry
No I dont know about that what is resampling??? Thanks to Dave for making the logos look better. I have reduced the pictures on the page to about 20k each and they look ok, so thats 120k of pictures about 20k for all the logos. Is this ok???. The thing is the type of place I work we need to display or should I say justify what we do so I need the site to display pictures of people/places etc. Im going to load the home page again in a bit.

Another thing Im going to do is get rid of "Please click here for more information" above the menu as Jaybee suggested but I need an "announcement/news" feature as things are constantly changing so Im going to try and put it in there. Lets see how it goes!!!!!

Hi Larry,

Firstly I think you've done a great job for a first attempt, far better than my first attempts, and in some ways better than my pages now.

You mention that these logos are your employers main partners, why not stick them in the Links and Credits section you have there? If they have to be on the opening page, why not somewhere near the bottom? The reason i say this is because (i feel) with links to other sites at the top of your page, it's only encouraging people to go elsewhere rather than read your site first - and then finding a link to these sites in the Links section.

FYI - I'm on a 56k dial-up moden, the moving pictures eventually loaded, all logos loaded, two of the other pics at the top loaded and no background before my computer spat the dummy.

Nicole

For heavens sake don't put in a javascript news box or anything else that moves. Just use text.

If you add a news ticker or similar you'll just increase the size of the page again.

ok jaybee i was thinkin that but i wont do that now. I just like all things flashy. I was thinking of maybe having it in a different colour instead of the sandy orangy colour so its stands out a bit.
