Good software that can track rankings? - 10/13/2004 9:34:39
I just need a good software that can track rankings for a few different websites I manage. Anyone have any good ones? I was looking at things like Web Position Gold ... I just need something strictly to see where I am for keywords. I hand submit to search engines and rather like it (and do very well for it).

I am using digital point's API based tracker... not impressed though, because it completely misses some ranks (I found 5 that were "not listed" as being in google, and they all ranked in the top ten/)

I am not sure if the www. will show the same as the non www. version. also I think it stops showing at the #200. so if your result is 201 it will show as 9999

I wouldn’t stick to a software if I were you, I would just use a free set of online tools for that, the reason being that Google is not very friendly to most software, try this it is designed for Google specifically www.promotionworld.com/tools/

Summer, I used Free Monitor for Google (formerly known as Google Monitor) with good luck. It's free, and fairly simple to use. I haven't used it in at least six months, but I was happy with it back then. At that time I was focusing on a large variety of keywords (marketing different specific programs in academia), and a tool like this was essential. http://www.download.com/3000-2181-10154562.html Unfortunately, that was restricted to Google, and a significant 20+% of search referrals came from other sources, primarily Yahoo and MSN. I was happy focusing SEO on Google, but was curious what was happening on the other engines. I just downloaded it again and will try it out again, but am hoping that others with more experience have suggestions. Surely you pros can offer some tips!

I've had problems with digitalpoint's solution - same issues of it not finding the sites.

Update on my previous post: You can still download the "old" Google search position software that I mentioned above. I discovered that this software was bought out by another company, and they've released a revised version which is still free. http://www.cleverstat.com/google-monitor-query.htm I tried out the new version and like some of the features that they've added, namely that you can import keywords from a text file (a biggie for me since the reports i'm doing will likely track at minimum 100 keyword combos). It automatically keeps track of the best historic rank from your first run forward, and has a handy export to CSV function. I'll be tracking the info in a spreadsheet, so the CSV export is handy for cut and paste. Most notably, the install pointed out Google's TOS (http://www.google.com/terms_of_service.html) which prohibits automated queries unless done through their API. Registering for a Google API License Key is free and literally takes 1-2 minutes. It is option 2 at http://www.google.com/apis/ Once you have the license key, you simply paste it into Options>Preferences in the installed (revised version) software. The program will run without this, but since it violates Google's TOS I went the legitimate route. I tried a search of around 40 keywords. It wasn't exactly quick (10 minutes?) but not a big deal - I hit search and walked away. I spot-checked the results with manual searches, and they matched. There doesn't appear to be any limit on the number of keywords or results (my initial search was top 100 just to see where some of these landed, but I think you could even do top 1000 or 10000). The Google TOS limits queries to 1000 per day. For free, it meets my needs :)
