pindert -> Sasser: is it gone, or is it still there? (10/15/2004 14:09:27)

I am not a Webmaster or a computer professional... in fact, I am fairly technically ignorant. I am hoping that some kind and compassionate soul out there will be willing to help me, even though I don't know all the technical jargon etc that many of you probably know. My problem has to do with sasser. Up until Sunday, I was using an incredibly old computer with Windows 95!! (Yeah, I know!) Recently, I bought a used computer from a neighbor, and I finally got online with it for the first time on Sunday. The new computer, BTW, is running Windows XP. Almost immediately, I got the Sasser worm (I didn't realize that my neighbor didn't have a virus protection program loaded on the computer). I am pretty sure that it was Sasser because of the LSA Shell (Export Version) message, and other messages regarding "lsass.exe" that I looked up on the web at work the next day. Also, I was being automatically shutdown by the system within about a minute of connecting to the internet. Anyway, I have run McAfee and I've run Stinger, and neither of them said anything about detecting or killing any viruses of any kind, not even Sasser. However, when I connect to the internet now, I am no longer shut down automatically. It appears that Sasser is no longer there, but I am afraid it IS there somewhere lurking and doing damage. Why didn't McAfee and Stinger find Sasser? How come it gives the appearance of not being there any more? Does this sound familiar to anyone? Should I stop worrying and assume Sasser is gone? Help![&:] pindert
