PHpbb forum in front page - 10/15/2004 14:22:48
FIrstly thanks for all the help so far
and sorry for my multiple posts

As i said in an earlier message I'm trying to make a forum for my website which im designing in front page.

I've looked at phpbb and it provides everything I want.
The only thing I don't understand about the installation is whether my website has to be online or not.
I.e can I setup the forum page while still designing the website.
At the moment the website is in no way online and to preview it I'm using the preview in internet explorer button.

So do I need to have my website online to create customize and edit the forum?

If I make the forum will I need to talk to my internet service provider about anything for its installation (the installation tutorial said something about database???)

Thanks again
BobbyDouglas

The only thing I don't understand about the installation is whether my website has to be online or not.
- If you start the installation you will need to be able to access the website.

I.e can I setup the forum page while still designing the website.
- You can do anything you want while you are setting up the forum page.

At the moment the website is in no way online and to preview it I'm using the preview in internet explorer button.
- Once you decide to install the forum, you will need to be able to access the place you are going to install it to.

So do I need to have my website online to create customize and edit the forum?
- For the most part, you need to be able to access the area to edit the forum. FrontPage does not handle PHP files correctly, and might cause problems if you decide to use FP for the editor of the forum.

If I make the forum will I need to talk to my internet service provider about anything for its installation (the installation tutorial said something about database???)
- You need to speak with your host about the requirements for the forum. You can find the forum's requirements on the www.phpbb.com homepage.

You should think about finding a host for the forum. If you can spare $5/month I am sure you can find something that will meet your needs. If you need someone with good support (doesn't sound like that is something you will need) then you should talk with the folks here at Outfront.

Whoever your host is, should be able to help you with the database.

What I mean is does my website need to be online to install php forum. I.E does it have to be ' www.mywebsite.com' to make the forum because at the moment when I preview it in internet explorer its in 'C:\....... . '

For what I believe you want to do, you need to have a domain/hosting account already up.

Follow the link Bobby posted above and you should be set. Also, the phpbb forum has a lot of answers to most of the questions you asked us here.

Yes, it doesn't affect anything else on your system...

It's a seperate program. FTP stands for Fire Transfer Protocol, Filezilla is an FTP client, or program.

Its function is to copy files from one location to another... from your local HDD to a web server in this case.

I keep linking to this, knowing that it needs a lot of work, but it may give you a little insight into Filezilla...
http://www.bdwebservices.com/t_fz_1.asp

It's a tutorial for basic FTP using Filezilla that I started a while back and havn't touched since...

I don't think the web host would be too pleased at you transfering Fire to their servers:)

Small typo, should be - File Transfer Protocol

ftp is a completely separate program. It allows you to take files that are on your computer and put them onto your host's server. It doesn't do anything to Internet Explorer or anything else.

IE allows you to view web type files that are either on your computer or on the web. These are usually .html files. Whilst searching the net you will occasionally see other types such as .php.

Unless you set your computer up as a server, you will not be able to view those types of files on your computer, with or without IE. You have to load them to a compatible host.

Some hosts have the phpbb script already installed and you just need to select it as an option once you have bought your account with them.

Coo look at that, we all posted together. :)

You need to access your website. If you can figure out how to access it without being online then it doesn't have to be online.

I don't see any other way (from your knowledge) you can access the site without it being online.

First problem

Installed Filezilla

There are bars at the top which say adress username etc.

Since the website isnt online will the adress be C:\ ... ...

How do i find out the password username and port

EDIT:

OK just looked at the site manager of the file mennu

Do i need to create a new FTP site?

HOw do I find out my host and port

Edit again:

I've been reading other posts,

I dont think I have a host yet.

If I get a host does that mean my website goes online e.g www......

IF it goes online How easy is it for me to add updates to the website and finish design ing it

OK, I see we need to go right back to the beginning here.

You have built a web site but it's only on your computer, so unless you invite all your friends round to sit there with you, you are the only one who can see it. You have to have a host to load the site to in order for the big wide world to be able to see it.

There's a good tutorial which explains everything here

Ok i just found my ISP company they told me how to create a pwp.

So now I've got a host.

So do I just upload all my front page files using filezilla?

How can I find out if my host will support phpbb forum?

They only give me 30mb free is this good?

My website will have videos and pdf files for download is this the right option?

Once I upload how can I edit the website?

Are there an options you think would be better for me?

If you intend to host a website, forum & "videos and pdf files for download" you may be needing more space...

The database for one of my phpbb forums is running at about 50MB alone...

I've been looking around here are two things I might try

1)Ask my current ISp to give me more space (ill have to pay)

2) I've seen something called DreamHost, what I dont understand is whether it is an ISP or just smething for hosting websites or if it is an ISP. So If i get DreamHost can I still keep my current ISP.

PLUS: Is it bandwith that makes your website load faster

If you are gonna be somewhat or fairly serious about the project you are undertaking, your own domain & private webhosting for that domain is probably the best way to go about it.

Free always has a price tag, be that restrictions or just the fact you have to include someone elses addy in yours, if you get me?

Finding a good webhost is not an easy thing, there are so many of them, however they do exist.

Bandwidth is what you use when you download a webpage from a webserver, the free webspace via ISP ones usually only offer a small bandwidth per month useage, as they don't think home users will need much.

Yes but make sure you read the info your host sent you as to where to put it.

If it's a Unix host then no problem. Otherwise, ask them.

It's OK for free

Absolutely not. By the time you have loaded your site, videos, pdfs you'll probably have run out of webspace. As Taz mentioned you also need a decent bandwidth as downloads of videos use it at a rate of knots.

safest way is to change it on your computer then ftp the changes to your host, that way if you make a mistake it's not visible to everyone. Test it on your machine the way you are at the moment before uploading it.

quote:

Take a look at Serverfly.com. Cheap, loads of space and bandwidth. If you do a google you can find hosts with unlimited space. The offers change all the time.

Your ISP is the company who give you access to the internet via your phone or cable or whatever. They also chuck in a bit of free hosting. You don't have to use it and you don't have to use them as your host.

I think what I'll do is finish designing the whole website (take about a month)

Then I'll try and get a domain and private web space from either dream host or the one you are recoommending (haven't looked at it yet.

Then when I upload the website, I'll install the forum

Sound like the right idea

Ps. Thanks for all your help

Before I found this website I was stuck on so many things, If I hadnt come here my website would not be ready for a lot longer

Also, check out that tutorial link I posted above. It explains about getting a host and domain name.
