Nicole -> Different Browsers (10/15/2004 21:39:48)

Hi Everyone,

I'm in the process of downloading Opera, having already downloaded Mozilla and i've always used IE. I'm doing this because i previously had no real idea of how my websites looked in other browsers. I'm wondering:

1. Mozilla looks suspiciously like Netscape, is it just a new version of Netscape, or should i download Netscape also?

2. Once i've downloaded Opera, i'll have IE, Mozilla, Opera, Netscape (if it is different to Mozilla), and MSN Explorer. Are there any other browsers i should download, or does that collection make up most of the browsers people use?

3. Mozilla DID display one of my websites quite different from IE, and prompted me to download a java plug-in but I declined because i was hoping to get the "typical" version of all these browsers, therefore simulating what "typical" people with these browsers would have. Am i correct in assuming that any plug-ins like this wouldn't be downloaded by the average web surfer?

4. Will having so many different browsers on my computer cause any conflict among them?

Thanks

Nicole

You will need to get FireFox too - a favorite for many !

Both are offshoots of Netscape code, but that wont prevent variation between displays.
Certainly check in as many browsers as you can.

1 - Mozilla is actually the open-sourced version of Netscape... so they are similar but as Spooky suggested they may not render a page the same.

2 - That's the majority of them on Windows.

3 - It depends on the visitor. Most people run with Flash, javascript, etc. but many do not for security and stability. It all depends on the sites you / they visit and whether or not it's worth it to see what's hiding...

4 - no, no problems. Although I have had a couple of hiccups running Mozilla and Firefox at the same time...
