Colour Advice - 3/14/2001 18:12:00
I've been working on a website and am pretty close to completion.I've mostly been working on my laptop and today started testing on my desktop. Well lo and behold the background colour I have chosen (which looks to me like a taupe color) is more of a green on my desktop. <sigh, I knew this was a risk, but I didn't expect the change to be so significant> Any suggestions? I liked the original combination as it was masculine-like (or so I thought). The prototype is at http://www.webwellb-n.com/swab/ . If anyone notices anything else wrong with it, I'd appreciate the heads up! I do know I need to slice up the top graphic to get faster load times. ------------------ <thanks> Nancy </thanks> [This message has been edited by Nancy Nelson (edited 03-14-2001).]

Nancy,Hate to tell you this, but the background looks like (there is no other way to describe it) "baby poop" yellow/green. I'm viewing in IE 5.5. That with the red looks just (again no other way to describe it) just awful. Just know what I saw. Too inexperienced to know how to fix it.

Welllll, yeh.....what they said. Actually, Nancy, the green isn't all that bad but combined with the red and a couple of text colors, it doesn't click too well. Greens indicate nature, environment, good luck and stuff like that. Reds indicate excitement, energy, passion, danger, etc. so they are fighting it out on the page. I wish I could remember the URL of the site where you could submit your green and it would give you all the complimentary and contrasting colors. Somebody will surely have it. I bet if you submit it, one of the colors will be "Pampers White" Dave

Nancy,Sure hope you are a good sport since I started all this. Hope my blunt honesty didn't offend you! The description of the color was just the first thing that popped in my mind. By the way, I really like yellow/green tones like the color at the Cybercrew site which you may have visited and considered using this color on my site. Red is another of my favorite colors. A color decision for my own site is one of my biggest problems. All the articles I read tell you what different colors denote, but I don't always agree. Red, to me is bold, decisive, powerful, and I read that to some, it denotes blood, anger and such. Go figure! While we are having a laugh at your expense, have you considered changing the text to Peptobismal pink?

Yes, I'm taking this all in stride. I'm just thankful that I decided to have a look on my desktop (although I maybe should have done that earlier). One upside is that I am using a style sheet, so I can make changs fairly effortlessly.I'm going to try a dithering technique from the Photoshop Hands-on Training book and see how that works. I'll upload the changes when I'm done and we can see if that's any better... ------------------ <thanks> Nancy </thanks>

OK -- I think I'm happier with these colours (frontpage only).I've done with more of a grey-tone. I want to stick with the red because it's one of their corporate colours. Feedback? ------------------ <thanks> Nancy </thanks>

Now, this one I like! I almost liked it before, but this is just right. I didn't want to tell you what I thought it looked like so I kept my mouth shut. So many other folks were so descriptive )Don't colors just make ya crazy sometime, and then you'll talk to a long time friend and thier older, newer or slightly "broken" monitor will show them something completely different.

Nancy, Same here. No offense intended. It just seemed like one of those things that gets people started and they can't stop.I do like the re-do. It's a really neat site, and I understand why you want to keep the red if it is a company color. I also noticed you've removed the drilling rigs from behind the logo. That may have been a wise PR move in this day of environmental concerns--that's also another reason why I thought the green would evoke a feeling of "environmental caring". I should stop rambling. It's very nice. I really like it. Dave

Nancy,Your site with the new color looks absolutely great! The taupe and red really work well together. In IE 5.5 it really looks like the taupe that I assume you wanted in the first place.

Links on right hand column do not show up in NN 4.73. I can see a faint yellow pattern but can not read it. I know something is there because the pointer changes to a hand in those spots.

Thanks to one and all for their comments. The customer wants to know why I've taken their equipment out of the top banner, so I'll put it back in. Mostly I was hoping for a better quality photo first.Glad to hear it's looking better. I'll check it out in Netscape and Opera tomorrow. The links are handled with stylesheets, so they really shouldn't be doing this, but then again I might have pointed the wrong style to those links. Onward ho! When I'm closer I'll submit to the critique area as well. ------------------ <thanks> Nancy </thanks>
