transparent JPEG's? - 3/29/2001 23:28:00
Anyone out there know of a method or a program that will save or create transparent .jpg files? Or that will save a .jpg cropped to an object within the image rather than the box around the image?

Did that make sense?

I want to create a .jpg similar to a transparent .gif

Any ideas let me know, or if its not possible yet I suppose that's just tough...

The .jpg format does not support transparency, that's what .gif is for. Your only other option would be to cut out the object you want from the image and place it against a background the same color as your page background. This will fake the appearance of a transparency, but it can be very difficult to get the image color to match your page background color exactly. Worth a shot though.

Thanks Michael

That's what I've been doing, but thought I'd check with everyone. Is there another graphic format that will support a tranparancy while maintaining .jpg quality?

The .gif just doesn't cut it with photos.

Instead of trying to make the BGCOLOR property match the color of the background in your image, try using a tiling background graphic that exactly matches the color of the background in your image.

This sometimes produces better results. It's not pefect, but it's worth a shot.

The png format supports levels of transparency and 16 million colors. Like a gif, it's lossless and if you have PSP 7 it has a png optimzer to bust down file size. I've not tried it with PSP 7 but it's there.

With image ready or fireworks, you could slice the image up and make the part you wanted to be transparent a gif but the other part a jpg.

gary-

will fireworks slice an object (like say a basketball) out of a .jpg, or will it still be a basketball against a white bg in a square image?

The idea is to get a portion of a photograph cropped to fit the object in the picture, rather than a square or rectangle...

Bobby, I'm afraid that if you slice up a complex image and save portions as transparent .gifs but the main image as a .jpg, you'll end up with a rectangular image against a white background. You can't create a free form image without having a transparent bacground. You'll notice that selecting a circle and saving it as a transparent .gif still results in a rectangular image with the circle in the middle.

I've not played with the .png format, but I believe Photoshop supports it as well, and it ought to be readable in all current browsers.
