What's the difference?? - 3/30/2001 13:44:00
Hi - I don't get in this room much, but got a question for all you Flash/Swish people. On some sites I get the Flash movie with no problem (no activeX control) on others (most) my firewall blocks the activeX control (thank you for firewalls) and I do not get the movie. Question is: What makes the difference? ------------------ Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our speciality "How Can I Miss You If You Won't Go Away? "

I would assume it depends on how the swf is put into the HTML, as an object, or as activex control. I don't think it has anything to do with the actual swf file. These seems to be a wide variety of opinions on how to do this. FP makes it easy to insert as an activex control apparently. So - if you use FP you eliminate everyone behind a firewal, if you insert as an object you allow them to see it? Is this explained in Flash/Swish documentation? I'm curious because we (ACS) have over 22,000 PCs connected to the Internet and not one can load a ActiveX control. Why would anyone use ActiveX if you don't "have" to? I'm "Flash/Swish" ignorant and am trying to get a grip on the concept. Thanks ------------------ Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our speciality "How Can I Miss You If You Won't Go Away? "

as for why - I would assume not enough people understand what an ActiveX control is. FP will allow swf to be inserted as a plug-in, which I believe would work. It is more a matter of not knowing the best way to insert it. I also think that many people are afraid of the code and are not sure how to troubleshoot when it goes badly. Using the insert/active x eliminates their need to mess with the code - but as you said - is not the best solution. Marr

This probably won't help answer your question, but I add .swf files to a page using Dreamweaver - a couple of quick clicks and I'm done - which places it as an object. I assume this is Macromedia's preferred method for placement as they make both Flash and Dreamweaver.------------------ <--Your information went data way -->
