What's hot. What's not. - 4/5/2001 20:53:00
After having done some extensive searching of web sites similar to my business, some of them stand out from the crowd and others seem very dated (to me) which leads me to ask this question. What design features such as colors, navigation, backgrounds, technology, layout, graphics etc. do you think are not hot, therefore dating a site as yesterday's design and what features are hot today?

Here are some of my observations:

NOT HOT . . . .

Textured backgrounds
3D navigation buttons adn bars
Dull colors
Navy blue
Tan
Counters

HOT . . . .

Text navigation (as opposed to buttons)
Flash/Swish
Sound
Bold or unusual colors
Purple
Orange
Graphics unrelated to the business to market a message or concept. (An example would be use of a graphic of someone shooting a bow and arrow to sell the concept of a targeted niche market.)

Hmmm, interesting topic.
My opinions/observations:

Not

  1. Heavy graphics that slow down site loading
  2. Background images (background colors instead)
  3. Sound (except for the entertainment industry)
  4. Splash pages
  5. Flash that doesn't add to the site's content

Hot
  1. Text Nav bars
  2. Bold colors
  3. Small scrolling messages
  4. Actual content - as opposed to "fluff"
  5. Dynamic content - updated from a database or outside source

Gil,

Thanks for the info. Will be really interesting to get everyone's opinions, don't you think? By the way, would you explain or give examples on exactly what you mean by dynamic content. I'm unsure of exactly what you mean. Educate me!

By dynamic I mean conten/pages that are written "on the fly" by scripts. Most are database driven. IE: A reality site that has one or two "static" (constant) pages, but maybe hundreds that are written depending on visitor input.

MS's site is less than 100 pages, but can deliver over 250K depending on what the visitor ask for. All those pages are written as they are requested - IE: they don't exist on the server.

I see you are in Graham - I'm in RTP (today). Love the weather today, huh?

No! No! Don't look! My web is a perfect example of a dated site! It was developed for me some time back and it is not being maintained. Goal is to get another out there ASAP.

Actually, I live in Burlington and am soooo ready for warm sunny weather.

Too get back on topic, hope as many as can will add their opinions to this post!

Can't begin to tell you how much I have learned from people at this forum. Without it, I never would have tried do develop my own site. Hope that makes you all feel good!

OT, but that is very interesting information about the MS website. Do you mean that if I request to see a MSKB article on the support site that the article is then retrieved from a database and displayed on an existing ASP page.

Thanks

JoeV :)

Here's my opinion on what's hot and what's not:

Not
Loads of annoying Flash
Background Music (Except on the GateCrasher Page )
Large sized fonts
Texture backgrounds
Loads of different colors
Of course pop-ups

Hot
Cool, unannoying Flash
Limited DHTML
Verdana 8pt Font
Easy navigation system
Recognisable logo

Cheers....

offers some interesting insight into page design. One learns by example of what not to do.

Check this out for content delivery based on location of end user -

Ever notice the word "akamai" appear on the bottom of your browser as you review web pages? The link above shows one reason why.

No - requesting a KB article causes the "data" to be retrieved from a database and a page (asp or html) to be written by a script (being MS, probably VBscript, but on most sites Perl). There is no "existing" page. it's written "on the fly".
