Top rankings =lower sales but mid-page = high sales? - 10/27/2004 18:12:46
I am quite baffled by this... I have had top rankings again and again for several keywords. My sales have dropped dramatically. THEN, my rankings fell for a few key phrases, down 4 points to make me mid-page (from 1 to five) and my sales have quadrupled.

Anyone else experience this? I know I personally ignore the first couple of listings when searching... anyone else? Any thoughts or comments? Mr Anthony Parsons? One Page?

are you perhaps ranking for other terms. are you tracking at the term level? is it a large volume of sales?

#1 listings = more sales for me on all my sites. Every study I have read indicates that the top spot generates more clicks than the second spot. The second spot more than the third - and on and on.

When your ranking fell for your main terms, did it rise for 100 small phrases?

Are you tracking these details yet? For each sale you should know exactly how that person came to your site (if possible).

There was a drop in traffic as well, but an increase in sales.

I was just thinking -- I worked as the sole administrive and contract person ina national marketing company that was responsible for several million in sales yearly. The owner and I were the only employees and we worked out of his garage converted to an office.

He had told me that after 30 years, he had noticed that the more he required from someone, the better the lead and higher the sales rate... I was wondering if being in position 3 or 4 would mean better sales. I have one client with several top ten rankings, very few are are #1, most are in the middle, and she gets about $1500 in sales daily on average.

I always root for the underdog- thats why Ive been a redsox fan while never living in Boston (also a Cleveland Indians and Buffalo Bills fan - see the pattern?) - why is that relevant? well, for some strange internal psychological reason, when I am going to pick from a listing, I generally pick from within the middle - not the number 1. It makes no sense but, hey, I seldom make sense..lol

Well, I comparison shop, personally, and visit the top five or so on the page and then decide. My TRAFFIC has decreased slightly, but my sales have increased greatly. My rankings only dropped for google (for baby sunglasses) and that is what is being ordered.
