Opening a web on a different machine - 10/28/2004 5:40:01
Hi, I've got a question which I'm sure is very straightforward, but don't know what to do, so I'd appreciate some help. I run a desktop and a laptop and would like to open and edit webs stored on the desktop from the laptop. Does that make sense? I have a web which is stored on my desktop and I want to edit it from my laptop. I can navigate to it and open it as a disk based web by going to c:\inetpub\www\webname, but can't work out how to open it in IIS. I have IIS set up on both machines and would open webs locally (on either machine) using http://localhost/webname, but don't know how to do it across the network. I hope that makes sense to you. Thanks. Michael.

RE: Opening a web on a different machine - 10/28/2004 8:57:50
Hi Dan, That's not quite what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to open and edit the desktop web directly from the laptop, without publishing to the laptop. If I type http://desktop/webname into the browser on the laptop, the web comes up ok, however if i try to open the web in frontpage on the laptop (with the same address http://desktop/webname) it comes up with a 'connect to Desktop' login screen where the user name is greyed out as Desktop\guest and asks for a password. The guest account is disabled on the desktop (and I'd like to keep it that way) and there is no password set up on the desktop anyway. Whatever I enter as a password, even if I leave it blank, I get an error saying: "the folder http://desktop/webname isn't accessible. The folder may be located in an unavailable location, protected with a password, or the filename contains a / or \. To cut a long story short, what I'm trying to do is create a situation where if I'm working downstairs, and I have a moment of inspiration, then I can quickly open up the desktop version from the laptop and make changes. Any help will be grately appreciated. Thanks. Michael.

Dan, I've got a workgroup which the laptop connects to by either a wired or wireless connection. The wireless connection is managed by a Belkin ADSL modem with built in wireless router. As for access permissions on the desktop IIS, I've not done anything there, so I guess that could be the problem. Where do you suggest I start? Michael

Dan, I still get the same problem - the login screen is set by default to be the guest account and is greyed out so I can't change it. When I follow the steps you laid out, after I've selected the admin account and then entered a password, it puts a tick back in the Allow IIS to control password box. Should I leave it there or get rid of it again? Michael

Michael Do not let IIS control the password - that is one of the main causes for this problem

OK, I just want to check.... On both the laptop and the Desktop, do the following and post the results back here: Start>>Run>>cmd Enter the command: ipconfig /all Hit return and then let me know what each machine returns

Is there a way to copy the information from there? If not, do you need me to type everything out or are you looking for specific bits?

Yes I can access the desktop from the laptop. I've got a few folders shared on the desktop and I can access and edit information in them.

I finish work in an hour...I'll have a look on my IIS machine at home...see if I can solve the problem there For now:- Try sharing C:\ on the desktop.. <edit> Brainwave:- On both computers: Right Click On My Network Places and select Properties>>Right click on the Network connection for the desktop - router - laptop or desktop - router connection>>Properties>>Authenticitate>>Check All </edit>
