Opening a web on a different machine - 10/28/2004 5:40:01
Hi,

I've got a question which I'm sure is very straightforward, but don't know what to do, so I'd appreciate some help.

I run a desktop and a laptop and would like to open and edit webs stored on the desktop from the laptop. Does that make sense? I have a web which is stored on my desktop and I want to edit it from my laptop.

I can navigate to it and open it as a disk based web by going to c:\inetpub\www\webname, but can't work out how to open it in IIS. I have IIS set up on both machines and would open webs locally (on either machine) using http://localhost/webname, but don't know how to do it across the network.

I hope that makes sense to you.

Thanks.

Michael.

If I'm reading right, you want to take the web from the desktop to the laptop via a networ, Yes?

You're right - It is pretty straightforward:

1. Just to make sure you can - In your Fave Browser, on the laptop - browse to http://$computername$/webname (Replace $computername$ with the name of the desktop PC)
2. If the page loads, go on to step 3...
3. Open FP, and go to open the web:
4. If prompted for UserNAme and Password - use the ones for the Admin account on the Desktop PC
5. Publish the site down to the HDD on the Laptop, or to http://localhost, dependant on whether you have IIS on the laptop or not

Any problems, you know what to do:)

Hi Dan,

That's not quite what I'm trying to do.

I'm trying to open and edit the desktop web directly from the laptop, without publishing to the laptop.

If I type http://desktop/webname into the browser on the laptop, the web comes up ok, however if i try to open the web in frontpage on the laptop (with the same address http://desktop/webname) it comes up with a 'connect to Desktop' login screen where the user name is greyed out as Desktop\guest and asks for a password.

The guest account is disabled on the desktop (and I'd like to keep it that way) and there is no password set up on the desktop anyway. Whatever I enter as a password, even if I leave it blank, I get an error saying:

"the folder http://desktop/webname isn't accessible. The folder may be located in an unavailable location, protected with a password, or the filename contains a / or \.

To cut a long story short, what I'm trying to do is create a situation where if I'm working downstairs, and I have a moment of inspiration, then I can quickly open up the desktop version from the laptop and make changes.

Any help will be grately appreciated.

Thanks.

Michael.

Have you got the network set-up correctly? Do you have a workgroup or domain? Or did you just hook them up via Wireless networking and let XP do the rest?

Access Permissions on IIS of the desktop? Have they been set?

I may need to take you through setting up a network, step by step, and setting up an intranet server step by step - it's not hard, but it will solve your problem:)

Dan,

I've got a workgroup which the laptop connects to by either a wired or wireless connection. The wireless connection is managed by a Belkin ADSL modem with built in wireless router.

As for access permissions on the desktop IIS, I've not done anything there, so I guess that could be the problem.

Where do you suggest I start?

Michael

On the Desktop:-

1. Right Click My Computer
2. Select Manage
3. Expand Services & Applications
4. Expand Internet Information Services
5. Expand Web Sites
6. Right Click On Default Web Site
7. Select Properties
8. Select the Access Permissions Tab
9. Uncheck Allow IIS To Control PAssword
10. Click On Browse
11. Click On Advanced
12. Click On Find Now
13. Select the Admin Username
14. Click Add
15. Click OK
16. Enter A Password
17. Click On OK
18. Re-enter Password
19. Click OK
20. Close The MMC (Should be the currently selected window)
21. Move To Laptop
22. Try and Open Web via http://desktop/webname

If that fails, try just opening http://desktop via the laptop FP...

Not sure if the above is 100% correct...I don't have IIS here...work won't lemme have it:)

Dan,

I still get the same problem - the login screen is set by default to be the guest account and is greyed out so I can't change it.

When I follow the steps you laid out, after I've selected the admin account and then entered a password, it puts a tick back in the Allow IIS to control password box. Should I leave it there or get rid of it again?

Michael

Do not let IIS control the password - that is one of the main causes for this problem

OK, I just want to check....

On both the laptop and the Desktop, do the following and post the results back here:

Start>>Run>>cmd

Enter the command:

ipconfig /all

Hit return and then let me know what each machine returns

Is there a way to copy the information from there?

If not, do you need me to type everything out or are you looking for specific bits?

Problem Number 1:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

Can you access the desktop from the laptop via My Network Places? (View Workgroup Computers)

You can remove the info now - for your own safety:)

Yes I can access the desktop from the laptop.

I've got a few folders shared on the desktop and I can access and edit information in them.

I finish work in an hour...I'll have a look on my IIS machine at home...see if I can solve the problem there

For now:-

Try sharing C:\ on the desktop..

<edit>
Brainwave:-

On both computers:

Right Click On My Network Places and select Properties>>Right click on the Network connection for the desktop - router - laptop or desktop - router connection>>Properties>>Authenticitate>>Check All
</edit>
