I've just read this thread and uploaded one of my pages to check that it still validates. Using Firefox 1.0 preview release I get this message:
quote:
Sorry, I am unable to validate this document because its content type is application/octet-stream, which is not currently supported by this service.
The Content-Type field is sent by your web server (or web browser if you use the file upload interface) and depends on its configuration. Commonly, web servers will have a mapping of filename extensions (such as ".html") to MIME Content-Type values (such as text/html).
That you recieved this message can mean that your server is not configured correctly, that your file does not have the correct filename extension, or that you are attempting to validate a file type that we do not support yet. In the latter case you should let us know that you need us to support that content type (please include all relevant details, including the URL to the standards document defining the content type) using the instructions on the Feedback Page.
I spent ages messing around with the settings on my abyss web server to no avail. Then I tried again using the dreaded IE and it validated OK. What's going on, do I need to change a setting on FF? It used to be OK for validation, but I'm not sure if I have validated using this 1.0 version before.

Firefox and the others are really picky about MIME types. Unsurprisingly, IE lets all sorts of things go.
It could be a couple of things.
1. your host doesn't have the Mime types set up correctly. This is especially true of the freebie hosts who only do the absolute minimum. I was bashing my head on the desk for ages when I couldn't get mp3s to stream from my freebie but could on my paid host.
2. You may need to install the extensions/plug-ins for FF, Moz, Net etc.

I don't think it's that because I am using Abyss web server just as a test server, and it has always worked before.

Do you mean extensions to FF etc., or extensions to the web server to enable it to work with FF etc.? I can't find anything in either that seems relevant. I am confused.

Still the same with FF 1.0. Any ideas?
It works OK with FF on my machine at home. The only difference is that at home I'm behind a software firewall and in the office we have a router with a hardware firewall.

I meant the extensions for Firefox but if it works on your machine at home then there's obviously something getting blocked at the office end.
Try talking to the guys at Moz. They might know of problems with specific hardwalls.
