shopping cart software - 11/5/2004 18:05:06
I am looking to get the ability to sell online and I have seen where you can get your own software packages with a one time fee or you can use a service for a monthly fee. Which do you think would be the best solution. My business is selling apparel. The bank that I work with has software to do real time credit card approval when you set up a merchant account with them.
Thanks

Depends whether you're using a Unix or Windows host. There are loads of shopping carts out there.

First check your control panel on your host to see if they provide free pre-installed scripts. If not,

For Unix/Linux there's Cube Cart or OS Commerce

I don't use asp but if you need an asp cart then do a google search for asp shopping cart or go check out www.hotscripts.com

I have used Ecommerce Templates on many sites & have never had a problem with them.

They are very easy to use.

I like Erin's solution also, and we have been having good results using this one also, Turnkey Web Tools

I have used open source solutions also like CubeCart, but their support hasn't been that great, but their product is good. It takes a little while w/ e-commerce solutions to find your comfort zone. I have all of my major clients using the turnkey solution now.

Anyone have any links for Ecommerce Templates demo stores that are very good?
I went through about 50 of their demos, they seem to be be easy to customize, but I haven't found one that really stands out.

I keep hearing a lot of good things about that place on here, but haven't seen one store that I really like...

[edit]I did find one very good customized one, http://www.lxsport.com/, but how hard do you think that was to customize?[/edit]

Hi

I know the person who set up that store, he used the Generic Version with his own design. The software is made up of 5 ASP or PHP include lines for each store page that can be plugged into an existing design, rather than taking one of the pre-made templates and modifying them.

Cheers
Andy

That turnkey site looks pretty good.... Very straight forward and clean...

I'm looking to sell CDs and Downloadable PDFs online.... I'd be using one order form per site (each site selling only one product) so I'd have to get a licence for each site wouldn't i? I'm presuming that people would be able to fill in their details (I would have to get a worldpay and paypal a/c I presume) and the orders would be emailed to me for completion?

Does it offer the option of secure download areas for PDFs or would I have to look elsewhere?

The design of the shopping cart on the lite version looks very clean, do you have any examples of what you've done with it (obviously I won't be buying anything!) so I can see the options?

Thanks Andy, that sounds pretty simple to do. It would be nice to give it a try. Have you heard about any of their demos at all?

Hi

Best thing to do would be to send me a mail for further information as I'm one of the owners of the site and it wouldn't be right to use up space here on a third party application I guess.

There's no downloadable demo I'm afraid and from the previous poster, Celtic Dragon, there are some Mods for downloadable goods.

My first advice to you is to purchase a web hosting on a UNIX server, it is cheaper than the MS Windows one and much more secure. Buy an account which is paid on monthly or yearly basis, not a one time purchase one. Try looking for a hosting plan including Merchant software like MIVA for example for creating your store front, one of the hosting companies I came across offering such a package was called aplus.net if that helps.

Hi Celtic -

Actually, we just launched a light cart today, H2o-Ramps-Lifts

Also, you can see the Full Cart in action on several sites, but this is my favorite one and it has handled heavy volume since we went online with it. Mark Martin's Authentic Merchandise

These things are very customizable also, meaning they have a built in WYSIWYG editor and also are CSS Driven which is nice. They also run well on a Linux Box and an asp version is also on the market. When you get ready to do your first one give me a shout if you run into anything, we have installed literally 20 or more of these and they are a snap.

Another great feature about the Turnkey solution is that they control panel for the client is very intuitive and allows them to be able to go in and add / drop items and also print shipping tickets, etc. Also, to answer your question, it seems like to me that there is an add-on module or maybe it comes with it that will allow you to do exactly what you are talking about w/ the software, etc.
