websites not displaying properly - IE6 - 11/6/2004 12:29:38
Hello,

I'm having trouble displaying some content on certain webpages. Please bear with me because I don't know that much about tech and I don't speak your language very well.

So, my IE won't display certain types of ads. For example, on http://slate.msn.com/ there is a large ad on the middle right that won't display at all. In the space where the ad should be, it says 'The page cannot be displayed.'

Same problem occurs on http://www.knoxnews.com/kns/govols , where the big ad right in the middle of the page behaves the same way. And on this page, same problem on the two vertical ads on the far right.

I don't think this is a problem with displaying pictures, as everything else on these pages displays perfectly. From what I have learned so far, this seems to be a problem with 'little' websites linked within the 'bigger' websites that I linked above. I think these are called backlinks.

The really annoying thing about this behavior is that my browser's failed attempts to link these sites show up in the back button pulldown menu, and now my back button doesn't work properly - you have to hit it many times to go back one page.

Things I have tried to fix this problem already - Spybot S+D, Adaware, Windows XP repair install. No fixes from these attempts so far. I haven't done an XP clean install - maybe I need to? I don't know.

Thanks and I really appreciate any help.

The ads are from people such as doubleclick. It sounds to me like you have these blocked somewhere.

Try looking in your IE settings for starters

It looks like you need to install Macromedia Flash on your computer. All those ads require that it exists on your computer. I'm surprised it doesn't try to download it for you. That's normally embeded into the flash code.
