MS Word problems - 11/7/2004 14:27:44
Any MS Word experts, please help. I am using XP Pro, and Office 2000 at my home. Hopefully it is not serious, but when I open a word doc in My Documents folder, and go to open another doc, the word doc that is open has been copied and the name contains a "~$" in front of the name. For example, "house chores.doc" is open, and in the open list, "~$house chores.doc" has been copied, but is grayed-out. If I click on the document it states "MS Word can't import the specified format. The feature is not currently installed. Would you like to install it now? YES NO I click NO and it comes up with odd symbols on the document. I am nervous to click YES to install. What is this and has someone hacked my computer and is maybe reading about my chores, etc.? I have discovered when I search all files and folders, that a webpage of the document has been created with the "~$" in front. Any help with what this is, if it is dangerous, and how to rid it would be helpful. I have Norton Int Sec, PestPatrol, and AdAware 6.0, none have deleted it.

The ~$ symbol means that that document is currently open and not yet saved. As far as I am aware, this is not a problem; as soon as you close any of those documents the symbol will disappear. HTH Carol

created with the "~$" in front. its the "timed backup" - its what enables recovery if system crashes and you never saved the file

Thank you everyone. I have honestly never seen it occur before. I would rather be safe and ask, then take a chance with something I know little about. I appreciate everyone's response.
