emacs, gzip and tar - 11/13/2004 13:04:59
I thought I'd do myself a favour and try out Emacs... oh dear:)

I don't have winzip so I downloaded gzip and tar, so in my little directory I have

emacs.tar.gz
gzip.exe
tar.tar.gz

I run the following line in a (beloved) DOS window

gzip -c -d emacs.tar.gz | tar xvmf -

and it tells me it doesn't recognize tar as a program. I run gzip -c -d tar.tar.gz (thinking, "perhaps I need to unpack tar????") and I get a billion lines of code spew through the DOS window.

Has anyone else done this successfully on Win2000 or XP, because I'm tired of getting instructions for Linux come up in searches.

My head is about to explode!!!!!!!!:)

Windoze (naturally) doesn't really support those files, you can only open them when you have either WinZip or WinRAR installed on the machine...

Both have perfectly good free versions

TAR, GZ etc are Linux based compression utilities, which is why the search results return Linux answers:)
