FP Publishing Error "553 can't open file"??? - 11/14/2004 9:46:12
I'm getting the above error when I go to publish my site. I have called the hosting company and they suggest I try another ftp publishing software like WSFTP or Filezilla but I downloaded WSFTP and can't really get it to work. Any ideas on why I'm getting the above error and how to get around it?

Thanks in advance!

Jeff

Have you tried Publish—the FrontPage preferred method? If you are using any functions that require the FrontPage Server Extensions, you must PUBLISH, not FTP.

Yes, I get this error when I "publish" through frontpage. Do you think this is a problem with FP or the hosting company?

Thanks,

Jeff

It sounds like it's a permissions problem.

It could be that you're trying to load into a folder you shouldn't be. Check that your settings are correct within FP.

If that's not the problem then:

553 is an FTP error so could also be

due to 'directory structure too deep'. That means that you have folders inside of folders inside of folders in your root directory folder. For example: http://www.yourwebsite.com/folder1/folder2/folder3/folder4/folder5/folder6/filename.html

Some hosting providers limit how deep you can go and a violation of it will cause this error.

Another source of the error is '553: Improper Names'. Hosting providers may configure the server to not allow specific names for files. That might be the use of characters that are usually allowed by the OS but they would like to avoid.

If none of the above then contact your hosting provider support
