How does one respond? - 11/16/2004 1:32:34
My rankings fell about 50 placements and as they dropped, an affiliates site climbed... It seems someone who joined my affiliate program copied the entire first page of my website (metas, too) and is using a redirect to my site! What is the best and most diplomatic way to respond? I have to act fast, as I should get googled again any day!! HELP!

I wrote early this morning .... Mr. X, Please remove the following page from your website : . Copying our website information, verbiage and/or images without consent (including meta tags) is considered copyright infringement (Title 17, Chapter 5, § 501). In addition, using a redirect script such as you have will cause your website, as well as ours, to be blacklisted from Google per their guidelines : http://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html Quality Guidelines - Specific recommendations: Avoid hidden text or hidden links. Don't employ cloaking or sneaky redirects. Don't send automated queries to Google. Don't load pages with irrelevant words. Don't create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content. Avoid "doorway" pages created just for search engines, or other "cookie cutter" approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content. Although we have offline stores, we primarily conduct our business online and see this as a very serious offense. Being blacklisted in Google can have serious ramifications at this time of the season. Please email me when the page has been removed. Regards, Signature

Your experiencing a symptom of page jacking. Using a redirect, the affiliate is replacing you in the rankings. This could be done on purpose or an accident. Since they affiliate is copying your site, I would guess it was done on purpose. The dupe content is not causing the problem (unless they are an older site than you and they have higher PR). The redirect problem is a major bug with Google (and others). If the site is using your text fill out a DMCA report to get them removed. Don't give them a warning. If they are removed, it solves your problem. Now is NOT A TIME TO BE NICE. This is your business, your livelihood. Try exploiting other bugs in Google in order to nuke the affiliate. I am at war right now with a competitor who filed a VeRO complaint with EBAY - Effectively removing me from selling a profitable product (that I own and have manufactured). They remove me from eBay for a few days until it gets straightened out - I fricking blast them out of Google. Seems fair.

Hi Summer, I read this yesterday, but not knowing much about the subject I didn't respond. I gathered somebody had copied your work without authorisation and was hoping somebody would respond with what i was thinking and they have. . . to get tough. You don't have an aggressive / nasty streak do you? Well i'd assume it's kind of necessary in this case, and in business generally, so i'd make your response very firm and direct. Somebody has written that it could've been done by mistake, so in that case i'd give them 24 hours to correct the problem or face further action. I wouldn't tell them what the "further action" is going to be, i'd wait and see what they do about it first. I also wouldn't quote Google's Guidelines to them, at best i'd put a link to that part of Google's page in your response, but i'm not sure that's even necessary. Can you possibly even find a stronger word than "Regards"? Just my 2 cents, but i hope it helps in some way. Nicole

They copied a page to my website and then, immediately upon clicking their link, you are sent to another website in a matter of seconds, if that long. Google does not like it. I have several new SEO clients that were blacklisted with their former seo firm because of this practice.

When I was heavy into web templates I had an affiliate who did this. I confronted him, and he stopped right away. He never was able to understand what was wrong about it, but he didn't want to lose the affiliation. He always played nice after that. t

I have what I think is a similar problem. Maybe someone here can explain this to me. In Google, if you type in my business name "VividPix", it lists my site first (www.vividpix.com) and then second it list the site of wanna be competitor, "DJGaryBlues" (www.djgaryblues.com). I have looked at his meta information and do not see VividPix listed anywhere there or in his text on the home page. Do you know how he could be doing this?

Thanks for the responses... I sent an email out -- I have to copy it here I was just so astounded : quote:
Done with pleasure. I was going to drop your affiliate program anyway due to lack of results over the last 2 years I have been promoting it, you just beat me to it. > This email is to serve as a Cease and Desist letter regarding the > advertising of our affiliate program on your website, using copyrighted > and trademarked information. If the page below is not removed > immediately, we will be forced to pursue legal action, as well as contact > all major search engines, your hosting provider and any and all other > necessary parties to protect our interests. > > Your immediate assistance and communication in this matter is required and > appreciated. > > Regards, > HOWEVER -- more astounding is the fact that he removed it last night, and I am back up to my first page rankings (with the exception of 'baby sunglasses'). :)
