Reducing Swish Size with Graphic Background - 6/27/2001 17:43:00
What is an acceptable size for a swish movie? I have a graphic banner that is making the swish too large. The swish plays over the banner. The only requirement is that the final page show the graphic banner. Is there a way to keep the swish small/load time down?

Without seeing the movie its hard to tell how bad it is. You could start by optimizing the image you imorted into Swish. www.xat.com has a great program for getting file sizes down.

If the movie is getting a little large I would add a preloader to it so users can decide for themselves if they want to wait.

Hope that helped

There are no special tricks to doing this really. I have experimented with making the movie cvery small and then enlarging the percentage in the actual HTML page. This is cumbersome however as the graphics will not increase in size without total destruction - so you have to start with the at normal size.

An acceptable Swish should be kept well under 300kb. 300 is really pushing it for Dial-upers.

The best way to keep the file size down is to use the same graphics over and over - use as many dingbat graphics as possible and optimize your graphics to reduce their size before inserting into Swish. There is a catch with this though as Swish compresses graphics even further once imported. You have to find a happy medium to start with.

Thanks for the size guideline. I've also glanced at xat software description and it looks very promising. Thanks.

300KB? Goodness. I defer to Marr as she's far more Swishy than I, but I personally try to keep the total page size down under 100KB, let alone a single file at 300!
