Securing my Wireless High Speed Connection - 11/16/2004 22:21:24
Hello. This past weekend I had our new cable high speed internet service hooked up. I'm using a wireless router (Linksys) as I use my laptop with the service. I would like to make the connection secure as I notice when I open "network connections" that it show my connection as "unsecure." I'm in close proximity of my neighbors and can see their wireless services come up as secured. So how do I make my connection "secure"?

Thanks,
Jeff

Probably the first thing you want to do is change the password on your router. Most people forget to do that... then anybody with that router manual knows the password to get on... and change the password... :)

Turn off DHCP and lock down the router by MAC address (there will be buttons for most of this stuff)

What that does is to disallow anonymous connections and only allow computers to which you grant permission ahead of time.

Use WAP or WEP encryption, whichever your router has. You'll have to install your encryption key on each machine that you want to allow onto your network. (don't worry, it's all pretty much point and click stuff)

Then make sure you have good software firewall on each machine. The Windows XP SP2 built in firewall is a bare minimum... get ZoneAlarm or something like that.

This probably won't keep the NSA out... or even a 12 year old with a laptop and a caffein addiction... but it will keep out 99% of the world, including your neighbor (probably).

There are some things you can do beyond that... it just depends on how paranoid you are... :)

<edit>
And, by the way... welcome to the wonderful world of broadband :)

Hi,

I wasn't sure which model. This should give you an overview though...
