Paint Shop Pro 7 - 7/13/2001 22:40:00
I am not experienced with graphics but am in a must learn situation. Whenever I attempt to set transparency to a gif (using gif export), I lose a great deal of sharpness (& resolution)and the colors seem to extend beyond the borders. When I reopen the gif in an attempt to use the sharpeness tool, it will not allow me to perform any functions. Help!!!

Gif files are saved with a maximum of 256 colors, so the program is reducing the image to what it considers the closest choice of color.

As for applying the sharpness tool, it can only be applied to an image with true color levels. If you apply this and export again, you will have the same problem.

To increase the color levels, and have access to all the effects, go to colors>increase color depth>and choose the 24 bit option.

You could also check the colors used when you export the gif. There should be a tab for colors when you export, and the settings there may be off. Increase the number of colors if it doesn't say 256, and choose one of the radio buttons for web-safe or either opitmized medium cut or octree.

Hope this helps.

Actually, I did not mention that I had already checked these items, to no avail. Any further suggestions are appreciated.

I never bother. I just fill in the bits I want to be transparent with some color not used in the image - black, red, white (nice solid, non-ditherinbg browser colours) - stick the image on my website, and use the FP transparency tool.

Works great, every time
