Guest -> Web backgrounds.. (7/16/2001 23:51:00)

Hey I have a question. I went out and bought a copy of paint shop pro and I am having a REALLY hard time figuring out how to use it.. Looks like a very versitile program but also very confusing. If I want to make a background for my website or theme i guess is what i should call it I just design in paint shop and save as GIF and load as a theme correct.. Ok i think i have that much figured out.. Now what I need to know is how to set it up to the correct size to save as a while background. When I go to make a new file it asks me how many pixels and so forth I have no clue how to measure this way. I basically just want to make a picture big enough to cover the whole background and setup my color scheme before i put my links and soforth in it.. thanks for any help you can give me I am slowly loosing faith in this great but expensive and confusing program..

One tricky thing about making a whole picture as the entire background is the screen resolution of the viewers. Most people are making sites viewable at 800x600 screen resolution, this is an average. Some percentage of viewers still use 640x480 screen size.

But let us say you want to venture out and try the screen size of 800x600. Make the picture size in PSP 800x600 and then design your picure for the background. Keep in mind though, that if the BG is full of colors that run to the edge, the BG will start over if the page scrolls down far enough. To solve this, design your picture in the center of the design window in PSP, leaving the outside area the same color as you want for the page color in your web. Again, it will start over when the page scrolls, but will look better. Or make the page short, no scrolling.
You can think about using a picture about 400x300 and let it tile across the page. There are many ways to do backgrounds, these are but a few.

Hope this helps.

Another thing to consider is the file size. Many of the backgrounds you see on site are actually small images that tile when set as a page background.

It can be challenging to make such an image that tiles seamlessly, is a small file size, and doesn't interfere with the text on the page.

Paint Shop Pro does have a feature that is under Selection I believe, that says make seamless somethingorother, but I've never had the best of luck using it.
