cbarton -> Versions of FP (11/19/2004 18:30:01)

My client's hosting company only has FP2000 extensions on the server.
I'm using FP2002.
Is this the reason I can't access the site through FrontPage?
I would have thought you could at least access the site.

Yes

You will experience some problems when using FP2002 to build a web destined for a server with FPE2000 installed - contact your host and ask they if they can upgrade the extensions

And if they won't, switch to one of the other 100000000s hosts out here who actually upgrade their software.

Client is willing to change his hosting company, (personally I like HostMySite.com and will probably change it to them) but I was just very surprised to find out that I couldn't even get to the login/password window!

Was wondering if this was due to the old extensions (current host won't upgrade), or could it be something else. You'd think one could at least get into the site if it had some version of FP extensions.

I am not quite sure what would cause that other than FrontPage Extensions not working.

If you are hosting websites for a client, I would find a host that has multiple domain hosting. Basically, you can add on many domains to just one account, then you charge your client.

But don't forget, most hosts require you to answer your clients question, and that your host will answer your question.

Basically, you cant tell your client to contact who you are hosted with, your client contacts you, and you contact your host.

Thanks for the responses.
I went to Microsoft.com looking for a definitive answer and found the following question and answer. Looks like this upgrade will allow publishing to a server without extensions. Am I understanding this correctly??
====
Q. What type of servers does FrontPage 2003 support?

A. Web sites created with FrontPage 2003 can be published to any server—including Microsoft Windows® 2000, Microsoft Windows NT®, and UNIX—even if it doesn't support Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions. FrontPage 2003 also provides support for publishing to both File Transfer Protocol (FTP) or Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) servers. The optimal combination is to use FrontPage 2003 in combination with Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services on Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003. This enables you to access the entire set of new functionality in FrontPage 2003, along with improvements to the way you did things in Microsoft FrontPage version 2002 and FrontPage 98.

FPSE can be installed on all serevs but Mac ones at the moment[;)]

You can only publish when the FPSE are istalled...FTP does not require the FPE..as it is not an FP process

You can still use FP02 on a server with the 2000 extensions, it just means that some features will not be available to you.

That guy really knew his server stuff.

Which brings me to my original post. Your statement above is what I thought, but I can't find anything at Microsoft to substantiate this. If I had "proof" I could tell the hosting company they are in error and to check further into what the problem is. As it stands, I'm not sure what the problem is as I cannot publish to their server using FP2002. It's not on my end, because I am publishing to dozens of sites every day on other hosting company servers.

BobbyDouglas -> RE: Versions of FP (11/21/2004 15:58:58)

Tell your host to publish using FP 2002 to reproduce the error.

Description of the new features in FrontPage 2002

New Publishing Interface

The new publishing interface allows you to select publishing options, see a list of files on the remote server, and select individual files to publish or not publish. This feature requires that the FrontPage Server Extensions (2000 or 2002) be installed on the remote server but not on your local computer.

Proof

In addition, revisions to fpse2000 that must be applied by the server techs.

Be easier if they updated their FPSE to 2002 [;)][;)]

If it's like any host I've come across..."M$ is wrong...we are right"..and if they say that, get a new host...
