Fading a photo - 11/20/2004 2:40:26
Hi everyone,

I've used Paint Shop Pro 8 for ages to create graphics for my websites, but something just eludes me, and i'm sure it's very simple to do as it's a very common effect.

Take a banner photo and fade it from full graphic to background (apologies for the terminology) like the one shown here, except that it appears this banner photo is totally faded even from the right hand side.

I've self taught myself to [kind of] be able to do this, only the best i've been able to do has quite a distinct line where the fading starts.

Like most things, i try for hours to create the look i want, and end up throwing my hands in the air in frustration and give up, at least for the time being. Next time i try i usually get it. But this one has been eluding me for probably a year now, and i'd really appreciate some help.

Thanks

Nicole

It's dead easy to do in Corel Photo Paint, I don't know PSP but if you search the help files for "Transparencey Gradient" there should be something there.

In photo paint you can adjust the gradient as required using the transparency tool.

Attached is a quick one I did earlier.:)

If you are using the picture for the web and saving as a jpeg, before you apply the gradient set the background colour of the image to the same RGB settings as used for a background on the area of the site where you are using the image.

Hi Nicole,

Hopefully PSP 9 is similar enough.:) Create a new layer and select the flood fill tool. In the materials pallet set the foreground properties to gradient and then click on the foreground properties box. Click on the Gradient tab and select "Fading Background" and create a copy. I called mine fadingB. Edit your new gradient as desired with color and degree of transparency, OK out saving changes. Flood fill your layer. You may have to undo and edit your fill properties to get it just as you want it. Once you're satisfied, merge the layers and save.

Thanks guys,

That is Soooo simple lol, i feel so silly for not working that out. I was aware of the gradient tool, but wasn't creating a new layer first then flood filling it. The thing is, now i've been fiddling with all those gradients, i've changed their original properties. Does anyone know how i can easily reset these properties?

Thanks again

Nicole

Most PSP8 palletes can be reset by clicking the curved arrow often in the top right corner.
