How can I add a DROP SHADOW to a photo? - 7/17/2001 16:31:00
Can anyone please tell me how to add a soft drop shadow to my digital photos, on both a colored or a textured background? I have FP2K but Microsoft Image Composer *seems* to enable me but I don't see HOW. I have PhotoShop 4.0.1. Thank you!------------------ StickMan

For a colored background in Image composer do this:- resize your photo as you want it and click on it to select it - Click on the effects tool (5th from the bottom in my version) - Choose category: Outlines - Drop shadow is the first effect here, right click to select it and then click the details tab - In the details area you can choose the direction of the shadow, it's size, transparancy and colour. When you have chosen these click 'Apply'. Play with the settings to get the effect you want. - If you dislike the result right click the image and select undo. - When you are happy select the image, click File>Save for the web and in the resulting dialogue box specify the background colour. Patterned backgrounds are a bit trickier, especially if the pattern is complex rather than say a simple texture. Because jpegs, which is how you will save photos, cannot be transparent you cannot have the background show through. Thus you need to create the shadow as above and then place it on the background within image composer. Then select the background and image and save as before. However it is difficult to get the background on the photo to sit seamlessly on the page.

Photoshop 4 did not have the drop shadow effect built into it. That came in 5. However, you can achieve the effect but doing this. Select the picture. Now create a new layer. Fill it with black. Change the layer order so the black box is hidden behind the picture. Now move the image slightly down and to the right until it is showing as much of the drop shadow as you would like it do appear. Finally, adjust the layers opacity until it has as much shadow as you want. Of course, its as easy as effects, styles drop shadow in 5 and above. Frankly, if you use photoshop and are doing web work, you should definately spend the money on the upgrade. By version 6, it has the ability to do rollovers along with an uncountable number of other improvements.
