Place for single site status test - 11/21/2004 16:56:16
I feel foolish, because I've found and used this tool a few times but haven't bookmarked it. :) One of my sites appears to be down but my host's server status indicates everything's operating OK there. Can any of you point me to the tool that tracks the path between a user and a website's server to see if all the 'connections' are working?

I'm sure there's a more technical (and direct) way to describe it, but I can't think of it - I've tried several searches and can't find it. Thanks for your help!!

I normally do a tracert from my machine but, not noticing that Carol had replied I went on a hunt and found this.

I think that Jaybee's link is the one for the details. :)

The command line makes more sense - then I don't have to worry about someone else's system. But now here's the silly question.....

When I do the Start<<run<<cmd, I get the DOS prompt screen (or whatever it's called in this generation :)) but it's set at C:\Documents and Settings

Running the tracert command from there gives me this message (regardless of the domain I use) - "unable to resolve target system name http://www.wesellstlouis.com"

Do I need to be setting it to something other than the C drive? How do I get it to see the internet? I feel rather silly, but sometimes it's those basic things that get me. :)

Thanks much!!

Not sure why, but I get the same thing unless I use the "-d" option

Start>>Run>>cmd
tracert -d www.wesellstlouis.com

Penny

When using tracert you don't need the http:// bit, it looks for the domain www.whatever.com and then obtains an IP address, adding the http:// bit throws it off.

If you get bored of waiting, just hit Ctrl+C to cancel it, or for the full set of commands type tracert /?

Sorry....I've been using DOS/Command Prompt for 10 years...i kinda know it well..:)

No need to apologize.. :) Thank you very much for the info! In another lifetime I used DOS commands but it was before the internet took off. And since then I've forgotten most of it - what I do remember seems to be enough to be dangerous.

Happy Thanksgiving!
