Novell and Windows - 11/22/2004 15:49:06
*/ insert favorite obscenity here /* Our so-called local computer "experts" are still using Novell and Windows together, despite a long history of problems. Recently, (as in Friday) every single Access database and any SQL database with an Access front-end corrupted whenever they were opened. As of today, we STILL are having problems, only now, it's affecting Word documents as well. Can anyone PLEASE point me to some reliable information showing that Novell and Windows do not play well together so that I can try to force some changes to be made? (Ironically, in the past, any time I've had problems logging in through my Novell client, the "experts" have removed it from my machine and just had my use the Windows login to access my network resources. Gee whiz, I don't seem to have any problems then!" */ insert stream of obscenities until the air turns blue /*

That's part of the problem...we don't know which part is causing the problem. The server is running Netserver and around here in the office, we have a mix of Win2k and WinXP machines running the Novell client. It's a mess around here right now. I've been unable to do any work today, since I keep all my files on the server so they get backed up.

I worked in an office for 6 years with Novell Netware as the network os and windows os on the clients and we never had a conflict between them.

We run into problems constantly. Sometimes we're completely unable to ever log into the network, effectively stopping any work that day. This time it's more serious than that though. We can log in, but it seems every network file we open corrupts. All of our Access databases are still toast (including the front ends of all of our SQL server databases). Yesterday, we started losing Word documents, too. Here in a bit, the "experts" are coming over to upgrade all of our clients...even though I've been using the version they're upgrading to since June.

I have no doubt that you have serious (and frustratning problems) but how certain are you that they derive from some incompatability between novell and windows?

I'm 97% positive. As soon as the "experts" started applying Novell patches, we lost our ability to use our files on the servers.

And the answer is..... A! I've known for a long time they were collectively only about half a step above scripted first level tech support. They have finally come to the conclusion that they have no idea at all what the problem could possibly be. They updated all of our clients and it didn't change a thing. I'm now half way through Day 2 of being unable to work at all.

Novell does not mix well with Win XP Home Edition nor Win XP Pro/Home with SP2. Home Edition was not designed for networked environments, and I know the latter from first-hand experience. Good luck

quote:
Seven routers all failed simultaneously Wow! What are the odds of that? And do you believe its true, or is that what the experts told you? One router might have failed and affected all the others, but that's apparently not what they said. I would echo the comments of Brian (Reflect) and dpf above - I have worked in an environment where Netware and MS were both present, but it can be a difficult beast to tame unless your admins are top-notch. In any event, I'm glad to hear it is resolved.
