Expanding Banner Graphic - 8/1/2001 18:08:00
Hi Guys,I am using a gif as a banner graphic. It has a blue background with logo, navigation buttons etc. I have made the graphic 800 wide & located it in a shared border on a white page background. When viewed at higher screen resolution, I want the blue background of the gif to extend the full width ie. to adjust itself automatically based on screen resolution. I have seen this done on other sites but it is a mystery to me. Cam anyone tell me how to achieve this? Geoff Pearson

Hi.The .gif itself cannot change size. What you can do, however, is place it in a cell with a colored background, same color as the .gif backgroun, that will change with resolution. Just a hint...if your graphic is 800 pixels wide it will cause a side-to-side scroll at 800x600 resolution. 760 pixels is about the limit for that resolution. For a resolution of 640x480, 595 pixels is a guideline. Sandy ------------------ Stu Reilly Design Allegheny Web Dreamweaver Sites [This message has been edited by Goober (edited 08-01-2001).]

Cells expand vertically with content. Netscape cannot read the height attribute. For a left border to always reach from top to bottom you can make it your page background. Make a graphic approx. 1600x2 pixels. Make a rectangle on the left side the color you want your border to be. Make the right side (or just the canvas) the color of the rest of your page...white or whatever. Save it as a .gif. Import it into your FP web. Format > Background > Background picture > browse to find the .gif > OK. It will tile to fill the page. Then, build your tables, making one of the columns over the colored part for your navigation or whatever you had planned for that area. The other alternative is to color the background of a cell, then use non-breaking spaces (Enter) to make it reach the bottom of the page. With this method you need to look at each page and set it according to length. Be sure to test in browsers at different resolutions (as you should anyway). The method you use will depend on what effect you are trying to achieve and/or what you find easier to work with. Sandy ------------------ Stu Reilly Design Allegheny Web Dreamweaver Sites
