i just wonder as this has happened since i installed SP2 for windows XP. if it has anything to do with it? as i've said, i;ve worked this way with this site and server for years now with no real problems. this is out of the blue.

No relationship with SP2. Read the info in the link that Larry provided.

I must be missing this. I've read the article and although options we're offer to 'newsgroup user' he appears to have tried them all and not had any luck with the issue.

Server Error 5XX Server Errors in the format of 5XX are server side errors, nothing will be wrong with the end users PC. You will need to contact the host, inform them of the exact error message you are receiving, tell them you need this sorting as soon as possible, if not sooner. Server Error 500 is an Internal Server Error, your host needs to sort this, if they say there is nothing wrong, try a different FTP client, or get a new host <edit> rt is also short for route, check your net connection before you go any further - check Firewall settings, check the ISP connection status, if your ISP caps bandwidth, make sure you haven't reached the cap. Larrys link is good, read the info carefully, follow it to the letter. </edit>
