Lost Photos - 11/24/2004 18:39:07
I have just launched my first web-site that I built using FP 2003 and everything was going fine in my photo galleries until I put together my last page which looks fine in my browser preview but when I publish I lose some of my pictures and all of my thumbnails and scroll buttons just the boxes with the red square and making my page about two foot wide I have deleted the page 3 times and re-built but the same problem still occurs I have tried adding photos to other galleries and still no thumbnails I have tried detect and repair and it has made no difference any help in this area would be greatly appreciated the site in question is WWW page quiz night Thanks Terry

Terry,

These types of situations always boil down to path statement problems. One such example on your site (below) is the use of spaces in the path statement which the % signs represent and which your UNIX host server doesn't recognize. Begin by cleaning these up, republish and get back to us if you hit another snag.

Iam not too clever when it comes to making alterations like this could you explain in simple terms for me , do i have to change the name of each image or just remove the spaces and if so is there not a follow on effect that I will have to change file names in other folders sorry for being a thicko it runs in the family Thanks Terry

Terry,

UNIX is not good at recognizing UPPERCASE either, so experiment with one image eliminating uppercase letters and all spaces - the spaces can be replaced with an underscore _ if you wish for ease in reading. After that republish and see what you have.

Yes, there could - probably will - be a ripple effect: the one example I pointed out was the large photo which probably was thumbnailed elsewhere. As a consequence, all thumbnails may have to be deleted and done over so that all site large photos and the thumbnails point to each other.

Larry, I have tried to do what you suggested but i am having little joy I now appear to have two problems 1. Any photographs that i try to add to an existing gallery i find i am unable to generate thumbnails for them i will see small box where thumbnail should be when it is clicked the larger picture will appear despite tidying up the file names. 2. Any new galleries will not produce any thumbnails just the small boxes when clicked nothing happens and the gallery is about two foot wide this is despite looking perfect when pre-viewed in browser could i have inadvertently switched something on or off the two pages in question are Blackpool 1 and Quiz night. I appreciate your help in this problem Terry

Terry,

You need to determine if the fault lies with the Photo Gallery or with the photo to thumbnail design steps.

Do this: create a "scratch" page and insert a photo from file then thumbnail, then publish. If the scratch page looks fine then the problem is with how your created the photo gallery, which is a whole new ball game. My guess at this point is you are missing a step or two in the insert photo/thumbnail process.

Larry, I have identified the problem my photo gallery is not functioning properly but does not give you any indication of this until you publish and view this is the reason why i could not add to existing galleries I have tried re-installing FP to no avail so i am now on a quest to find alternative photo software.
Thank you for all your help and support i would still be struggling if it were not for you. Thanks Terry:)

Terry,

This free software: http://jalbum.net/ was recommended by OutFront members in an earlier post. Haven't tried it but, apparently, it's passed muster.

This is an excellent free program - it doesn't use Javascript like the Jalbum mentioned above. Some people have Java and Javascript turned off for security reasons: http://www.ornj.net/software/webalbum/

Good luck.
