Okay. I'm using a hi-brite tft and I can't see anything on the second one. I had to roam around the blank bit an wait for something to appear. Not good for net newbies.

First one. I like the idea but not the look. I think I'd prefer the boards to be in colour to start with and then grey out on hover. As it is, it looks like you've forgotten to finish it.

For what it's worth I also prefer the first one. I like the contrast of the "rough sketch" effect background which IMO makes the live colour link stand out more.

The second attempt looks too bland to me.
