Frontpage not accessing any server - 11/26/2004 18:50:20
Hi All,

This problem is on our XP machine with Frontpage 2002 with Norton's Firewall & Service Pack 2 on DSL - I can not open any site with Frontpage.

Says Folder is unavailable - may be located in an unavailable location - protected with a password or the filename contains / or \ .

I can use same DSL on my laptop to open same webs. Any time I try to use XP machine - I get same error. I have tried going into firewall & allowing access - but that has not worked. I did reinstall Frontpage & that did not help.

Any idea?

Erin

erinatkins,

I don't have a reference point as it relates to your problem (fortunately), but here's what I'd do in your situation:

(1) Don't open FrontPage - go to the site folder and click on the index. htm (html) file to see if it will come-up in FrontPage that way.

(2) Copy the folder to a different location altogether, then from within FrontPage >>File >>Open >>Your Site.

Hope one of these works for you!

Since files are not on laptop or home PC I was not able to do this - but this gave me an idea - I tried pulling site up & clicked edit with Frontpage & it let me save changes.

Any idea on why I can use this way & not normal way?

Thanks
Erin

SP2? Otherwise, maybe an ISP proxy has been slipped in without your knowledge?

When I have got that in the past, it has usually been that the server was at fault.
Hope you solve it soon, Erin.
Cheers
Carol

I know it is not server since I can access at home with my Laptop. I know this is related to machine.

I was not sure what in service pack could be effecting this & if so how to fix it.

Any idea?

XP = Not the Problem
SP2 = Not the Problem
FP = Not The Problem
Norton FW = Most likely the problem

Temp disabling the firewall, and see if it will let you through then:)

Just allowing access doesn't always do it:)

Sounds daft, but the XP firewall isn't active is it?

erinatkins,

Last two suggestions from my now empty bag of tricks:

(1) Download "Open Web" from http://www.jimcoaddins.com/addins.aspx . This is a free program which seems to be aimed at your type of problem. I have not tried it.

(2) Publish your site down to a different directory and file name, then see if FrontPage will open it at the new location. My guess is that it will :) (I hope).

Larry,

Thanks for the tip - open web works. Still not sure why normal way is not working.

Every other machine in house works fine.

Thanks again,
Erin

Jimco :
"This add-in can be used if Web Folders are not working on your system to allow you to continue using FrontPage."

So, I assume that there is some fault with web folders in one service pack? :-)

Spooky,

My guess is that Erin also downloaded MS Office Service Pack which contains a FrontPage "update". SP2 gave me no trouble, the Office Update did.

I've run into this from time to time using FP '03

It's always "corrected itself" if I gave it a day or two and tried again.

Were these sites created using '03?

I've heard about similar problems that can occurr when bouncing from one version of FP to the next...

??
