Comments on the following please. Load times etc.

The scheme has to be colourful but not too in your face. It's aimed mainly at teachers but will possibly be accessed by young children (6-11) at a later date once the schoolwork pages are up and running.

All the other sites in the arena are typical business boring blue and white.

I have a problem on my monitor with the blue text on the orange background. Anyone else have trouble reading it?

The central column will scroll when it's full as it's been set up with css to do so, the menu is pure css, the picture scroller is Flash and hopefully small enough that dial-ups won't have to wait too long for it.

Loads pretty qucikly, looks good overall.

On my CRT, the buttons are a bit jumpy when hovering over, but I think thats more to what else I have running right now.

It's good, just looks a bit lost on my 1280x1024 screen...

Ta, can't do anything about the buttons, plain css. They're not jumpy on mine though, just quick.

As for looking lost on your monitor, well, that's what you get for having such a large res.

It's a fixed size due to the swf. I had it expanding but it looked daft. I've done it so it fits (almost) in an 800x600 for schools with old monitors. I'm still tweaking sizes and I haven't had the client OK yet so all may change.

don't like the lilac tex on the orange background in the middle column - it scintilates. try one of the burgundies from the left.

is the little chappie in the red cardigan a real pilot? ;)

psssst, clue.... check out the socks. Don't know too many chappies who wear frills. :)

Yeah, the text colour isn't right against the orange. I wasn't sure whether it was just my monitor or not. The client says it looks fine to him so I wasn't sure if it was me, my eyesight or my TFT.

Nope, not when it doesn't look right to me.

I've spent a lot of time getting that template to validate XHTML, CSS, 508 and AAA. This one has to be right. It's going to be looked at by schools, including special needs, education authorities etc.

I'm not having accessibility clobbered by the client liking an unreadable colour and getting complaints from anyone who's colour-blind. Talk about falling over your own feet at the last hurdle!

Yes, it doesn't work - the blue is too light I think.

On my CRT monitor, in FF the menu buttons flicker to the maroon background colour briefly, when moving the mouse over them. Doesn't happen in IE. Also the border between the buttons is showing as 1px thickness in FF but more like 4 px in IE.

There is a web site where you can check your pages to see what they would look like to a colourblind person - with 11 filters for different sorts: http://colorfilter.wickline.org/

HTH.

Yes, thanks Kitka, I've already checked it for Deuterope etc. but the results you get are dependant on your monitor/graphics card as well which is why I always get others to check it out. :)

The gaps between the links are down to the AAA insistance that consecutive links have to be separated by printable characters. I've shrunk them down to teeny but different browsers display them sightly differently. I'm still fiddling with them. Really annoying. :)

As for the flicker..... I give up. Oh where is Gorilla when you need him?

blue text gone. will decide what to change it to later. For now playing with the AAA problem. Had a genius idea to use comments but AAA says no. Rethink underway. :)

No, thought of that. Tried a . but a pixel is a pixel.

I think I've sussed it though. Check it out again. You may need to Ctrl F5

[edit] It works and it validates! Oh I love css. :)

Now don't go saying things like that. I want my drink.

No I haven't bitten that bullet yet. It's a pleasure I'll save for tomorrow or I'll never get out of this chair.

Mind you, it looked alright yesterday. Bet Opera doesn't agree with WCAG. Typical!

OK, so I couldn't resist. Not a problem, it's just the Opera shift on the centre box. Easily sorted. Ta for the tip off.

OK drinky poo.... I'm on my way.......:)

however much i like opera i always find it can be a bit weird even with completely valid code.

not sure what you did with the printable characters bit but could you have used a horizontal list (think nav list but no links - if you didn't need links.) ? well just a thought...

also don't forget your abbr/acronym tags as well on those
XHTML CSS 508 AAA

It looks different in my Opera to your Opera. :)

Still got to add all the finessy bits like acronyms. Wanted to make sure the general layout and scheme was OK before I moved on to the easier bits.

Client now says he can't get the page up. He just gets a blank screen. I pointed out that if Finland, Australia and Oop North can get it then maybe he's doing something wrong. :)

OK client was right, he couldn't. Corrupt DNS name for the host. :)

The page should be OK in Opera now Dave if you'd care to check it.

I've put acronyms on the validations but haven't finished formatting them yet.

Dan, you should now find that the whole thing sits in the middle of the browser window, vertically and horizontally so it won't be so easy to miss at your vast resolution. :)
