Author,

Your method of "uploading" was faulty. See:

http://www.quadrahosting.com.au/kb/article-59.html

Let us know how you "uploaded" files and we'll get you on the right track.

Author -> RE: You are not authorized to view this page (11/28/2004 12:34:23)

my method for uploading is very simple

login to my ftp account via Internet Explorer window....then copy and paste the files.........the article u gave me Larry M was pretty much helpful......so i visit to my host where i bought a hosting and domain and look out the answers and i got this

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

How do I specify my default homepage?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your default homepage This is the first page visitors see when they visit your website. The homepage is specified by uploading an index.html file or index.php file to your root directory. needs to be uploaded into your root directory In a computer file system that is organized as a hierarchy or tree, the root directory is the directory that includes all other directories. The root directory has no name. The root directory is represented simply as: / as an index.html file or index.php file.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and i do the same they told but i'm facing a same problem........plz help me out [&:]

jaybee -> RE: You are not authorized to view this page (11/28/2004 13:35:21)

You don't have an index.html file in your root directory.

There should be a folder on your host called html or similar that already has a file in it called index.html. That's where you need to put your site.

Author,

Ouch! Thought so.

I don't want to assume you are using FrontPage before passing on an answer, so please verify the design program (and version) you are using.

Author -> RE: You are not authorized to view this page (11/28/2004 15:29:13)

there is no such a directory.........where i can find index.html [:(]

You don't "find" it, you create it. The page file you want people to see when they first enter your site should be named: index.html If it isn't then the site won't work. Once you have the file named index.html, upload it via ftp or publishing with FrontPage to the html folder (directory) in your site.

Good luck.

the DIR i have :

DB
LOGS
WWWROOT

on which folder i should upload.....so the people can see it......if none of these soo can u tell which folder i should make?? i'm using "cute FTP 6.0 professional" [&:][&:]

Kitka -> RE: You are not authorized to view this page (11/29/2004 4:05:04)

All your files should be uploaded to the WWWROOT folder. If you have named one of them as index.html, there is a very good chance your site will work.

Good luck!

Author,

I don't get this except for the understandable "still in trouble part". You don't "upload FrontPage 2002 with MX2004" nor can you use two base design programs and expect the host server to figure the whole mess out when the files arrive.

So ... what base program stores your files? Said another way, what design program do you open initially to work with (add pages, graphics, text, etc.)?

Author -> RE: You are not authorized to view this page (11/29/2004 7:02:57)

WOOOOOO..........sorry i didn't mean that........ok..i'm using front page to design and for uploading......NOW WHAT?????

Giomanach -> RE: You are not authorized to view this page (11/29/2004 7:32:50)

Mind if I step in Guys/Gals?

You are on a windows server, most likely with ASP enabled, and FPSE installed. The wwwroot folder will contain everything that will be available for anyone and everyone to see.

IIS (Windoze) servers generally look for the following files, respectively:

iisstart.asp
localstart.asp
default.asp
default.html
default.htm
index.asp
index.html
index.htm

Make sure you have one of these within the wwwroot folder. I have crossed out iisstart.asp and localstart.asp as these are normally removed by the host for security reasons, and you shouldn't create files like that within the web root.

Design program won't affect this, but I must ask, from within FLASH MX 2004, how are you publishing the FLASH movie? Just the .swf file, or with the HTML file the program creates?

quote:

uploading both frontpage 2002 & cute ftp 6.0 pro

That can cause problems, but not like this.

This may seem like an oddball request, but could you possibly PM me FTP login details, and I'll see what's gone wrong from a directory structure point of view?

Thanks & HTH

Author,

This may be simple but it's also totally wrong. Now that I finally know you are using FrontPage, use the File >>Publish Site commands. The first attempt at publishing will ask for your url which you should input in its entirety - http://www.author-dump.org . After that the server will query for your Username/Password. After that click Publish Site.

Assuming you have constructed your site properly, the publishing function will establish the "missing link" on your host i.e. the index.htm (html) or default.htm (html) file. The site should display normally after this unless all the copy/pasting has put so many squirrelly files in place that the server can't sort them out. If you encounter this situation, ask your host to reset the site.

Never copy/paste or FTP FrontPage files again unless you want this thread to go into 2006.
