File Loading - 8/31/2001 23:04:00
Okay guys and girls, I need your help. While I'm redoing my entire site, and it will be a while before it's complete, I decided to just give the old one a bit of flash to tide it over.

I have a Swish file that I want to start only after it's fully loaded. The movie tends to start almost immediately because the majority of it is text. Although overall, the file is not very big by Flash standards(48k) and the page itself only weighs in at 1.27k, the problem is that there is a photo that fades in at the end, and sometimes it hangs up waiting for it to finish loading.

I tried adding some intermittent "loading" messages before the real movie starts, but if the page has been viewed before and is in cache, the movie loads quickly enough that it doesn't need these "loading" messages.

Is there a way to have a "loading" message like that, but have it stop when the movie is fully loaded so that the movie can play? You'd think there would be a way to do this ... I've probably overlooked it.

Thanks so much for any suggestions!

Ginnie,

You may have already tried this, but have you asked this question at swishzone.com I can't answer this for you, but I know that they have been very helpful to me about swi in the past.

Best of luck to you.

Bonnie

Hmm,

Maybe I'm missing something but it sounds like you just need to add a preloader. There is a sample one in the Swish samples or look in the help file under Tutorials.

You'll see "creating a preloader".

Thanks Bonnie and Troy! Yes, the preloader was what I needed. I didn't realize the preloader could consist of text with actions. I haven't used Swish much ... it does help to read the documentation doesn't it.

Would someone mind taking a quick look and telling me how long it takes before the "loading" text stops? http://global-presence.net

Does anyone have Version 2, and what do you think of it?

Thanks a bunch to both of you!

Ginnie,

I think you did a great job. The only suggestion that I have is for you to have your company name stay up just 1 second longer or 1 frame longer before it goes out. That would give your viewer longer for the name to register as your company name. But, you did terrific. I really like it.

I do have version 2, but as of yet have not had time to do anything with it. It looks interesting though. I do plan to get to it after this week. It has draw capabilities.

Thanks Bonnie. You're right, it did need to stay up a little longer. I modified it a bit ... can you tell me if it's enough or does it still need a little more time?

Make sure you don't get a cached version.

Thanks,

ginnie

The opening text seems to be very hard to read on my monitor. Here's what I can see: very light yellow text on a black background just befor the hands appear. Can't read the text as the light yellow seems to fade into the black backgroung.

Hi Don,

Thanks for taking a look. What resolution are you viewing it at? Are you on a Mac or PC?

The text is actually gray and it fades in and out against the black background. It's not a "heavy" font (it's Eurostile Extended), which might be why you're finding it difficult to read, perhaps if you're viewing at very high resolutions.

Anyone else experiencing what Don describes?

Thanks for the feedback!

Version 2 is a whole different program. It is a quantum leap improvement over version 1.5 and challenges Flash in sophistication and capabilities. It generates HTML in exactly the same way Flash does. And for the money it can't be beat. Flash? who needs Flash!

Ginnie,
When I veiwed the intro looked great. The only problem I could see is you need a lighter gray text color. It was hard to read on my screen.

Thanks Eric. I'll change that to a lighter color. I probably have my brightness level set a little higher than some.

Just curious what resolution you're viewing at ...
