Not Directly Editable - 8/31/2001 16:26:00
As a new PhotoShop user, I run into this one all too often. I try to erase or edit the layer, and this darned old message pops up. I've clicked around as much as possible to try to make it "editable," but I'm clearly missing out on some secret. To be even more aggravating, when I type is a Help search for this topic, there is not help. Go figure. Any helps for me here? thanks.

Hi Gene, Thanks...If my pointer is over the object, it looks like a little circle-cross out (like the no smoking sign), and when I click on it, the error message is "could not use the eraser because the content of the layer is not directly editable."

Dea,You will receive that message, or sign, when you are trying to edit or add images to a text layer. Text layers are only editable with text unless you have rasterized the layer first. You can also receive that sign when you are trying to edit a layer containing a shape produced from the shapes tool. These layers are not directly editable either. It can be frustrating but there are ways around it. Bonnie ------------------ bonniebrunt@earthlink.net www.outfront.net

Sure enough, Bonnie, it is a shape I'm working with. How frustrating. Would you or someone else let me know some of the "ways around it" you mentioned? I'm hoping to make some good progress on this new project over the long weekend.Thanks.

Well, it depends upon what type of item it is. If it is text, you can simply click layer, rasterize, type. If it is a shape, do the same but select shape instead of type, etc. You can also simply drag the layer from the layer pallet into the trash can if things are really bad!

Hi Dea,What I do, and I'm sure others have better methods, but when I am working with shapes and I know that I want to manipulate them, I make my shape. I select the image, make a new layer with the selection of the image and fill the layer with whatever color or gradient I want to use. Now, you have a duplicate of the shape that is totally editable. I usually hide the original shape by turning that layer off just in case I need to access the original shape again. This is pretty quick and easy for me. If I can offer some more suggestions, just ask. Hope it helps. Bonnie ------------------ bonniebrunt@earthlink.net www.outfront.net [This message has been edited by bbrunt (edited 09-02-2001).]
