Estimating size of SQL database - 11/29/2004 14:24:19
Does anyone know a "back of a fag packet" way of calculating the size of a msSQL2000 database? The database hasn't been built yet in any form, and I haven't had a good look at the dataset - but - I do know that the info to be stored is not large (several short strings, all taken from preset choices, no free text) and the total number of records at max is estimated to be 500,000.

s=ut?? e=mc(squared) :)

well this sure isnt my area of expertise but it sounds like trying to estimate the size of a house without # rooms, baths, etc.

That is true, but we could all say how big a house would usually be:)

There must be some sort of formula or method out there for this? How am I to even calculate the size of a record? There doesn't seem to be anything I can find on this subject...

That looks like the thing.

Thanks very much - I'm off to find a calculator and brush up on my maths...

I wasnt trying to be difficult - it just seemed to me that you were trying to estimate size prematurely but, as usual, rdouglas gave you a good lead ( he usually does). good luck

Don't worry dpf, I knew that. In fact, I was grateful somebody didn't reply with a flame - I knew it was a stupid question, but sometimes they're the ones you need to ask!:)

With what I know it's lucky I'm not proud...:)
