Format of Images - 9/4/2001 20:08:00
I have received a CD from a client for updating of a website. It contains image files in I know not what format - I right click them and they are just described as Type: file. I have tried opening them in PhotoShop, Image Composer, PSP, MS Paint, Kodak Imaging and a few others but all say they are in an unrecognised file format. How do I find out what format they are in - I know, phone the guy, but he is away will not be back for a week by which time he will expect the site to have been updated. The disc was produced by his printers, I don't unfortunately know who they are. The files are huge - one is 32 MB for example - if that helps. Any suggestions appreciated. At least if I know what they were I might be able to figure out a way to open them. ------------------ Katherine InKK Design LinKKs - Kilkenny's Online Magazine -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* "Dogs have owners, cats have staff!"

Can you give us the extension on the file name, and maybe we can go from there. A file that large could maybe be an Adobe Illustrator file? especially since it came from a printer? Just a thought. Hi, Katherine -Have you tried a program that will open Mac files? TransMac is one of the most popular. http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,10615,33745,00.html The only problem is the shareware version only opens smaller files. I think Andy has TransMac or something else that would work... can you zip one of the smaller files to see if he can open it? Linda [This message has been edited by LB (edited 09-04-2001).]

You are right Linda - I think they are EPS files.I have no idea what the extension is - that's the problem, clicking on properties just tells me it is s file. Duh. So the above is a guess. I will check out the above link and see if it works. Cannot seem to zip them either - prpbably cos disc is 'Read Only' ? Have found a few tifs on the disc so at least I have been able to do something.

I recently had a similar problem and it turned out to be a Quark file. I downloaded a free (albeit beefy) trial of Adobe's In Design and was able to open it.

Could be Quark, FreeHand, Illustrastor, Photoshop and most likely created on a Mac.I use MacOpener for files such as this. But the other mentioned program works great too. ------------------ Gene White WebTeky Full Service Web Development http://www.webteky.com/ http://www.webteky.net http://www.gwhitedesign.com
