MCD -> FrontPage 2002 Help! Emergency! (12/3/2004 13:50:41)

For the first time I am unable to open FrontPage 2002. It opens about half way then locks up my computer. All other programs are working fine. I have reinstalled the program but that did not work. The only changes to my system has been with my Norton Firewall updating. My computer is running Win 98. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I disabled Norton but the prolem continues. I did notice that for the first time my "Intrusion Detection" on my firewall is disabled. It will not turn on because it says my Windows is restricted. Could that be affecting both my Norton & FrontPage? If so how do I change or check this problem? The Windows help offers no solutions of course.

Also, in FrontPage, try Help, Detect & Repair. Have your original installation disk ready. Some FrontPage 2002 versions were part of MS Office Suite (discontinued with the release of 2003) so I suggest you run the repair feature from the original Office installation disk as well. Even if your version is not part of Office, I think both programs use common dll's, so this approach may have benefit. Note: if Outlook is your eMail client, backup your .pst file before running either repair feature since there is a possiblity it could be hosed in the process - happened to me [:@].

Last option (other than paying through the nose for MS phone ticket tech support), bite the bullet and buy the full version of FrontPage 2003. Money well spent in any event.

Intrusion Detection is "On" by default in Norton and should be enabled asap. Here's what Norton has to say about it:

Intrusion Detection scans all the network traffic that enters and exits your computer and compares this information against a set of attack signatures, arrangements of information that identify an attacker's attempt to exploit a known operating system or program vulnerability.

If the information matches an attack signature, Intrusion Detection automatically discards the packet and severs the connection with the computer that sent the data. This protects your computer from being affected in any way.

Don't think this bears on the FrontPage problem.

I had already tried the Dectect & Repair and it did not work. FP 2003 will not work with Windows 98 so that is not an option?

Ah, yes, you are right. Looks like MS Telephone Tech Support. Suspect you'll end-up with some registry changes when the dust settles.

One last suggestion, uninstall FrontPage and reinstall it electing "Custom", this time manually entering (under program files) either FrontPage2002 or Office 11. May work this way. Worth a shot since the program is of no value to you in its present form. Keep notes on this in case you need to use tech support.

Don't suppose Santa has a new XP machine in his bag for you, does he?

Tried your last sugestion Larry and FP still locks up. It's amazing, I've used FP for years and NEVER had anything like this happen. I have the feeling I'll be formating my hard drive.

Not sure MS supports '98 any longer. Do you mean UpGrade?

That aside, it sounds like MCD has a terminally ill machine and may be better off springing for a whole new box since throwing money at one's this age is a decided waste thereof. My opinion (and, unfortunately, my experience as well).

The do still support it, it's just no longer distributed

To upgrade would only be needed if necessary, and it is not necessary to upgrade all PCs

I am only on XP due to the software I have...

No offence to anyone reading this thread, the less experienced PC users especially, but problems with PCs are generally caused by a lack of maintenance, ignorance to the need of maintenance, and a lacjk of updating. As can be guessed, I'm a more advanced user than the average, and I do get problems, but they are my fault, as I do play with the OS itself, but my problems are few and far between...

At the moment, upgrading to XP, with all te bugs etc floating about the net, all you are doing is asking for trouble. I am still looking to block all of them out myself, have managed about 80%...but more and more come out...and I find it hard to keep up with that, get client work done, help others here, and on the 7 other forums i participate in...

/Note to self....stop being a PC Geek...

I totally agree. After some self-inflicted problems a couple of years ago, I keep after mine to the point of paranoia. So far - knock on wood - it's paid off. I Know, however it's only a matter of time ... hence my tagline.

One other suggestion that may or may not help.... make sure you have turned off Norton during the install. Occasionally virus checkers corrupt the process.

Well fellas, I have done everything suggested here. Most suggestions I had already tried. My Win 98SE was already updated. There is no doubt in my mind that when Norton did an auto update it contaminated my registry. You can bet your bottom dollar after I get through formatting my machine (will install Win 2000 instead of Win 98) there will not be a Norton product on it!

Suggestion, W2K is a great system, but Windows XP w/SP2 is more secure. Since you are going through the agony of a clean install, consider that XP will be supported many years longer than W2K.

I would have preferred XP but a friend of mine has 5 copies of WIN 2000 and he gave me a copy. I'm hoping Win 2000 will last long enough until this system wears out. Plus it's hard to be FREE.
