LOL, in your and my case, I think that pedantic might mean 4 feet (in mouth) but looking after children might be paediatric. [:o]

I recently did a demo one on my site, "Flexi-Floats", (not sure about link dropping here)

it's in the order header > middle > left > right > footer
all columns control footer

I'm pretty sure the header could be removed from first in the flow and put back using absolute positioning.

Will try it out and report back

Well I sorta fixed it, it is just that the footer only works inside of the middle column. Which I guess is fine.
