Office 97 on Win 2000 - 12/6/2004 17:18:36
Is anybody running any Office 97 software on a Win 2000 machine? I can't get Excel 97 to load and can find no suggestions in the Microsoft knowledge base.

Up until recently most of the machines in the office. Are you getting a particular error message or it just won't load?

I get an autoexec.nt error at the moment I click install. It says the system file is not suitable for running MS-Dos and Windows applications. This makes no sense because all apps 2000 and later will run such as FP 2002 and Access 2002.

I have had Office 97 running on a Win2000 box for over 12 months with no problems. Did you try uninstalling then reinstalling? And applying all the patches & critical updates?

Disclaimer: I know far tooo much Office 97 contains 16bit components, which shouldn't stop it running on Win2k, but, the file autexec.nt is abviously the problem. That file was introduced with Windows NT3.51, is on Windows 98, a service pack put it on 95, and was carried over to 2000, but (yup, that word), I can't remember whether it's SP3 or SP4 of Win2k that removes that file due to a security flaw in it....It also gets removed from XP, but the compatability wizard gets round that, as it auto kick in and runs the install under Win95 mode. What Service Pack are you on? they only abolished 16 bit components for XP, Office 2k and lter doesn't contain.

If you know anyone who has a spare copy of Office 2k...go get it....Office 97 won't install on Win2k SP4...or remove the services packs, and then install Office 97...then reinstall Service Packs...

Thanks for the help. I'll see if the service packs can be removed because at the moment I do not know of anyone who has Office 2000

Thanks Bobby. It is easy to find a used copy cheap of Word 2000 or even 2002 but no luck on Excel. I just need Excel to open documents that clients send me. Your suggestion may be just the ticket.

Good idea. That's still a great bargain considering Excel was going to cost nearly $200.00.
