PMS colors? - 10/18/2001 20:34:00
Hi.

I am supposed to put my organizations newsletter on the web and I need to change some colors first because the Pagemaker file I have of them uses grays and various percentages of blacks instead of the blues that the printer uses. I called the printer and was told that the ink they use is "PMS 307." I now how to set up RGB and CMYK colors in Pagemaker but what is a PMS color and is it possible that I can do that in Pagemaker?

PMS stands for the Pantone Matching System which is widely used in printing.

They are ink colors mixed for printing and thus have nothing to do with the web - you cannot use them online. You can buy and RGB guide to Pantone colors here - but it ain't cheap! https://www.pantone.com/ShopPantone/product.asp?ProductID=345

Someone once had the info contained in this online but the last time I looked it was gone - I would think they were caught out on copyright issues. I think the best you are going to be able to do is try to choose the best approximations you can.

I just found the link that used to have the chart - they seem to have some way of generating Pantone colours if you have CoralDraw, don't know anything about it but it may be worth a look. http://www.unleash.com/articles/colorchart/

Thanks, Katherine. I think I will most likely end up 'eye-balling' the colors!

Hi Tony,
You can define a PMS color in PageMaker by going to Utilities>Define Colors>New and you will get a dialog box named Color Options. In that box choose the libraries scroll and pick Pantone Coated or Uncoated. In the top of the Color Picker dialog, type your color number (307). Click OK to get out all the way. This will put the new color into your color palette when you Show Colors. When you get done putting the color into your PageMaker file, are you going to create a pdf or are you using it as a guide for building a web page? If you use the pdf then the color will be fine but if you are going to create a web page then you will need the hex value of the PMS color. I know there is a utility around that does that but I don't know where it is. Hope this helps you out.

Hi, Cindy.

Thanks for the explanation! I am going to make pdf files out of my organizations newsletters and put them on the web. It can save a lot of money on mailing when people just download things! This stuff needs to be done asap (maybe this weekend...yeah, right) so if I can use exact colors instead of eye-balling them that would save me a lot of time.

This is such a great forum!
