My images load progressively in Netscape 6, but not in ... - 10/18/2001 15:33:00
I have lots of JPG images on my web site www.edinphoto.org.uk.

These should load progressively - i.e. become increasingly clear as they load. This happens in Netscape 6, but not in Internet Explorer 5.

Can anybody suggest what I should do to make the images display progressively on Internet Explorer?

Notes:

I saved the images in "save for web" in Photoshop, with the progressive box ticked.

When I right-click on the picture while editing Front Page it is shown as being JPG quality 75, progressive passes 8.

I can get images on other people's web sites to display progressively on my Internet explorer.)

I have found a possible reason why I have been having problems getting http://www.edinphoto.org.uk to display progressively. See below:

I have found a page http://www.infoworld.com/articles/op/xml/99/07/19/990719opliv.xml which includes the following, that suggests that IE5 does NOT support progressive displays. Here is an the part of the site that refers to the subject:

“Another concern of Pochron's is the display of progressive JPEGs. These graphic files are interlaced -- the image is first displayed at one-quarter of its normal resolution, then one-half, and so on. Web designers use progressive JPEGs to help readers decide whether to wait for the whole image to load or switch instead to another page. If you see the first version of the image and decide you are not on the page you want, you can switch to another page without waiting for the full image to download.

"IE 5 still doesn't support progressive loading of progressive JPEGs, like Netscape has for years," Pochron says. "What IE does when it encounters a progressive JPEG is it waits until the entire image has downloaded before displaying it, which can take several minutes for large images over modems. This completely defeats the purpose of the progressive JPEG and actually makes its display slower than if it had been a regular JPEG."

Pochron also dislikes the fact that, "for some reason, Microsoft disabled the 'alternate image' HTML tag in IE 4.01 and 5 -- it worked in IE 4.0. The alternate image tag allows a Web-page designer to specify and display a black-and-white, lower-resolution version of an image before displaying the slow-loading, full-color, high-res version."

The Microsoft representative's response: "With [progressive JPEGs], Netscape does true rendering, where they will actually put up the blurry image and make numerous passes to get to the clear image. We are not architecturally unable to do this, but customers have not been asking for it, and our priority is to deliver to customers functionality they are requesting."

I'd have to say that I see Microsoft's point. I cannot really see any advantage to progressive rendering.

Abbeyvet:

I'm not too concerned about not having progressive loading on IE.

However, I still believe that progressive loading has one particular advantage. It gives the viewer something to look at while the images are loading. This, I believe, is more likely to keep the viewer logged on to the site, rather than having them wait for perhaps 10 or 15 seconds with nothing to look at until the picture loads.

This is odd, because the progressive images probably load slower, but I believe it is true.
