Uncrips graphics - any ideas to improve? - 10/29/2001 20:48:00
I am using a program called Arc Soft Photo Studio to create some simple graphics for my site : Text Headlines, and some re-sizing of photos.

The graphics don't loko altogther crisp and clean to me. Can anyone suggest why, and if its Me that's at fault, or the program?!

See www.travel-experience.net : all those small photos are re-sized, and saved as JPG 75%; plus the Headlines are also made in the software programme and saved as JPG 75%. Especially these headlines loko less than crips to me ... am I right?

Steve,
If I understand the process correctly, when you save your pics compressed at 75% and then put them into FP without changing the FP default setting it will compress them another 25% so,in effect, you have a 50% compression. If this isn't correct maybe one of the more experienced folks will let us know.

If by headlines you are talking about the column labels you might try saving them as gif format.

Yeah they are quite fuzzy.

I think the problem is the format - you have saved these images as jpgs and they really should be gifs.

I doubt if a programme called 'photo' anything is ideal for making these sort of images, though I am unfamiliar with the one you mention. Do you have Image Composer? If you have FP2000 it should be on the second disc. I don't know if it shipped with FP2002. If you do have a go with it, it is pretty good at gifs.

Hello Katherine,

Yes, I do have Image Composer ... though for some reason it does not list all my fonts (even though theyare all stored i the same place on my hard drive) ... and (naturally!) it does not give me the font that I want!

This Arc Soft programme does not have an option to save a GIF (only TIF).

I have no solution to why IC is not showing yor fonts - weird. I would try reinstalling it.

If that does not do the trick I would save the files as tifs in your current programme and then open them in IC and save as gifs from there. That should work, though it's a bit unwieldy. Whatever you do don't put tifs on your site!

There is a link here showing you how to save great quality gifs in IC - it seems complicated as opposed to the normal 'save for the web' method but it is really easy once you go through it once or twice (following the instructions MINUTELY) and it gives you tiny files with a really crisp appearance.

Thanks Katherine - I will try the saving as TIF and then to IC, and save as GIF ---

Katherine,
I went to the link you gave Steve. Installed IC and worked through the instructions. Pretty neat! I have one question. Are we saying that this will work on photos we would normally save as .jpg with numerous colors. If so I think it would really help on my personal site which is pictures, pictures, pictures.

Thanks,
Paula B

Yes it can save images you would normally save a jpgs as gifs retaining very acceptable quality. BUT - isn't there always a but? - it depends on the image whether the file size will be smaller or not.

Quite often with a photograph the number of colours is so great that you end up saving as a gif using the maximum number of colours available in order to get the quality you need. In this case the gif file may be larger than a jpg of the same image. You really need to experiment and find out what works best for an individual image.

I think though that you will probably find that for many photos jpg is still best.

What this sort of procedure does demonstrate though is how much IC can do - it is, inspite of what a lot of people think - a fully 'grown up' graphics programme. I have Photoshop and Fireworks also but I keep going back to IC as it does most everything I need to do more rapidly and in a more straightforward way than either of them. Occasionally when I look at the help or tutorial files to do something in one of them that i have been doing forever in IC I am amazed at how complex they make it. I think it is an awful pity that IC is not being developed anymore.

Thanks Katherine,
Think I'll play around more with IC and get to know it better.
