Hi All

I am new here having only just joined :) I am not new to web design although I know I have a lot to learn still, but I am new to having paying clients.

I have a client who wants music on his site. He also wanted a really dark background with animated gifs, hit counters - you name it. Hmmmm..... somehow I managed to speak him out of it lol! But I could not speak him out of the background but I did manage to convince him that if he wants a background we should make it lighter - so that is what I did for him. But now he wants a different piece of music on each page as he believes it encourages people to sit and relax more, then look around the site some more.

Hmmm.... How do I approach this one? Or should I just put the music on? If so - what are the publishing laws around this, and copy right etc?

Unrequested music on a site only encourages me to leave. I have yet to hit a site with music that could tell what my volume was set at and adjust accordingly. Most of the time I get blasted out of my chair (I occasionally listen to my own music while on the computer) [;)]

BTW how does your client know what kind of music is going to relax me?

thanks! i totally agree - if i come across a site that has music, i immediately close the page as i cannot stand it. but i need to tell my client this in a nice way... lol! he really doesnt understand the basic netiquette rules yet and i am happy to guide him but it is difficult when he insists on this. i dont know how i am going to get around this. also, his site is a business site - not a personal site or anything. this one is difficult.

Perhaps you could mention that maybe 20% of visitors coming to his site are likely to share his taste in music. And that half of those will also leave because they don't like having music foisted on them without asking.

How about offering the suggestion of placing links to the music files so people can make the choice for themselves. And then watch the logs closely for a while to see how often people do? [;)]

I for one wouldn't appreciate it at all...I have music playing all day at work, through headphones no less, and my music has a phat bass to it...and music on the web ruins it!

OK OK...nuff of my waffle...

THere are options out there, that will allow you to add music to the site, so that the user can choose whether it plays or not...FLASH being the obvious one...you can also embed the music, or use JS to start/stop it

With FLASH and embedding it you can control the volume, but not with JS

While we all know we detest background music this does not help Dodabby.

Why not ask him what music clip? Set it up on a test page that has his sites design on it. Have the client sitting next to you at this point. Then use a dialup connection. Make sure that the page is not in cache for the browser. Once you hit the page start a stop watch with the client and notate the load time.

I did this with my fist client a few years ago. I then explained standard rendering times for web pages at that time. The client immediately asked to drop the music clip.

Strive to the client that great, original content will keep someone interested in his/her genre to stay longer than any music clip.

Excellent idea, I was at a site only this morning, viewing a page for at least 30 seconds then the music starts.[&:] Needless to say I was at work and didn't appreciate it much.[:o]
